Where is Kava legal?

This is a just curious question.  It's legal in the US where I am, but I'm reading posts from people in Europe and Australia and it sounds like it's not over there.  I understand that it's legal in Canada as well.  Are Canada, the States and the regions it grows in about the only places?

Adults can bring in up to 2kg of kava in their carry-on baggage or in their checked baggage. If they bring it in in any other way it is illegal. So frequent jet-setters are well catered for. Everyone else is not. (Cry)

Yeah the rules in Australia are crazy. So obscure.

In Canada you can import it, possess it, and use it. But you cant sell it on the domestic market. Pretty dumb but at least its not illegal.

Same situation in Ireland. Importing is fine but unable to sell it. I think most of the EU is the same. Except for Germany and maybe a couple more.

Are you absolutely sure about that Dub? I think you may be right, but I can't find a copy of the laws pertaining to importing kava to Ireland anywhere. I've even emailed the Irish Medicine Board and the customs guys and none of them ever answered me properly.

Hey Midas, good to see another Irish person on here :) . I suppose it's a pretty grey area. The only real documentation I've seen relates to the withdrawl of kava for sale in 2002. Its definitely not on the list of psychoactive substances that are illegal to import.

The only country in the world where the sale, possession and importation of kava in any form and of any quantity is completely illegal is Poland. On the other side of the spectrum you've got countries like New Zealand where kava is 100% legal and not even regulated (i.e. even children can theoretically buy it). To the best of my knowledge no country (other than Poland) would put people in jail for the mere possession of kava, but there are several places (like Australia or Finland) where kava imports or sale are subject to regulations or limits.

Poland huh, I figured it would have been Finland. Pretty much everythings illegal in Finland, they were like the first nation after Thailand to ban K@. It seems pretty unreasonable and totally retarded to ban it, regulating it is even pretty asinine. I wasn't aware that it was illegal anywhere, just EU nations were of kind douches about it. I think it's saving grace is that it is abscurity and difficulty to use would make it highly improbable to interfere with pharmaceutical companies. I'm pretty sure big pharma is behind marijuana legislation.

People seem really afraid of pot. I sometimes worry that if more people hear about kava, the liver test fears will take over.... I don't know. I'm a Canadian ex-pat and at least where I lived the attitudes were extremely casual. Down here now, I won't touch any illegal drugs because I don't want the risk, but it does seem odd to me how much more it is vilified than alcohol. But thanks for the info all, it's interesting to me what restrictions governments come up with. It sounds like they are basically trying to discourage use, but not trying very hard. It's odd, because I have a feeling that if people could buy kava domestically, they would. Shipping would be cheaper and shipping times would be faster, so that would encourage local economy, which should be a concern for government....anyway...I'm totally off topic. Any thoughts?

Indeed, I was surprised to see another Irish person on here since it's a pretty small site :) I bit the bullet and emailed the customs guys again today, they have to respond to me eventually?! I'll post here if I ever get a reply.

Kava bans seem odd, because kava does not seem to exhibit any signs of "voodoo pharmacology."

"Voodoo pharmacology" is the idea that a drug will possess a person, the way a Loa can "ride" someone in Voodoo.

Kava drinkers do not experience personality changes. There are "mean drunks" and "happy drunks," but there's only slightly more relaxed and empathetic variants of how we normally are.

Remind me to stay out of Poland.

Anyone know what the situation is in the Netherlands? I will be passing through there over Christmas and wouldn't mind taking a little instant with me to enjoy while there.
