Based on what I saw in pictures, the kava trees are all stripped of leaves and waiting to get yanked out of the ground before they rot.

Sounds like the people are in the same condition.

Dr Lebot has estimated that over 1/3 of the kava in Vanuatu was destroyed, meaning the kava is still in the ground but with no stalks, it will rot if it is not harvested and processed. If they do not process it fast enough then they will start to get a substandard product, meaning that they will start to get kava that is rotting and molding. It will take about 2.5-3 years for Vanuatu to get back to normal kava production. Keep in mind that there might be more than 1/3 of the kava destroyed, this was just an estimate.
But on the other side of the coin I am happy that such a big destructive storm did not have more of a blow on the human life. I think there were 11 people that died, there could have been more but I am glad the numbers were low.
Aloha to all.

Chris
