I have never used kava before (or alcohol). I received my micronized nene a few days ago and began my adventure with just one shell midway between supper and bedtime. 1 tablespoon in 6 oz almond milk. No effects.... not surprising, but I wanted to be cautious. The following two nights I switched to water and drank three shells spaced 20-30 minutes apart. Unfortunately still no effects. I wanted it for sleep, but it hasn't made me sleepy or even relaxed. Does anyone have any thoughts? Do I just keep on with the same protocol? I also have micronized mahakea, but haven't tried that.

Hi Jenna,

You may be experiencing reverse tolerance, a poorly-understood phenomenon whereby it takes time for kava's effects to be felt fully by the user. 6+ tablespoon doses spread over several hours are not uncommon. Just keep truckin' on!

You may also consider valerian root (I like a product called "Valerin") as a sleep aid. Works wonders for me!

Welcome to the forums :) Some of us have experienced reverse tolerance in the beginning (For me it took about 10 days). That said, you could increase the amount of tablespoons. Try 2 tbs to that 6oz of water and see what happens. The key is to keep drinking it until you feel the kava. It may take a few more days to break through the RT but you will definitely feel its effects, eventually.
BTW, Nene and Mahakea are excellent kavas - Keep us posted :)

Aw Jeez @Jennabell, I hope you're not one of those goody two shoes that will never experience the feeling of getting stoned in your lifetime. If so, then join the club that my wife belongs to. You get to drive. :D
But seriously folks, you may just have to slug your way through Reverse Tolerance. If not, here are the car keys. Shakas and I wanna go Kava Bar Hopping. Sure, bring the dog along too.
