Quite interesting. I agree that kava should be marketed in the same way as tea or coffee (instead of being promoted as "natural benzo"). But I find the position that it is safe when one consumes it for "recreational" purposes, but not when one seeks "intoxication" a bit weird. I wonder what is meant by intoxication is "total krunk"/crawling back to one's bedroom etc? If yes, then yea, this could be a bit tricky, especially in the context of driving/operating heavy machinery.

They pack a lot of different ideas for kava-use in one article. When they write- "potential market developing in Australia for kava to be used as an alternative to benzodiazepines...". Then the idea of marketing the same as tea or coffee . My idea of kava use is just slightly on the lighter side of ritual with the coffee, tea comparison added in.

Well if you take coffee for example, many people drink it for recreation/pleasure. But if someone is chugging 9 cups in an hour attempting to get some kind of crazy buzz then that's a foolish pursuit of intoxication. Or with beer, drinking 2 bottles throughout the evening is definitely a recreational activity, but it's totally different from a goal of intoxication. One is the pursuit of a release of pleasurable neurotransmitters, the other is trying to get obliterated I guess. It's really splitting hairs for some people but in our western society of drug denial we have to draw many lines in the sand, and pretend that most of these lines don't overlap and contradict one another. As long as we are drawing lines in the sand, can we please tell the powers that be that recreational use is not always the same as abuse? It's absurd to postulate otherwise and it's so strange to me that some members of the scientific community actually go along with this outdated view

I don't understand what the change is. The 2kg limit, personally imported, has been the position for some years.
