Monkava'd
A spoonful of sugar makes the Awa' go down.
Alright so here's the scoop on this half attempted recipe.
First of all everything that I used may of course be substituted with non organic ingredients if you prefer to do so; but organic was what I had available.
A note before proceeding.
I realized after they were made why certain ingredients should be used rather than substituting, such as using the proper 1/4 cup of brown sugar and a 1/4 cup of cane sugar; it all comes down to the texture and maybe even a fuller taste, so stick to the recipe and whether you use kava or not you'll likely be just a bit more satisfied than I was (and I was pretty satisfied).
Here's what i required on my chopping block
⅔ cup whole-wheat flour, pastry or white winter wheat recommended
½ cup white flour (or can use all whole-wheat instead)
½ teaspoon baking soda
¼ teaspoon salt
1 stick butter (8 tablespoons), slightly colder than room temperature (if using med grind kava use a blender to blend coconut oil or the butter together with the kava for a short period of time then strain it)
1 egg
¼ cup brown sugar
¼ cup white sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
¾ cup chocolate chips
So that's the basis for the recipe but the things I changed were using all whole wheat flour, all cane sugar and that's it; (the whole wheat is fine but I recommend following the recipe exactly otherwise) along with everything in the recipe being organic.
Now to the directions
Micronized kava can be added during the mixing of dry ingredients or during the mixing of the other ingredients.
That's your choice given the nature of micronized kava, but med grind kava requires a workaround; which is exactly what my situation required, and why this is a half recipe.
Mix all of your dry ingredients in a small bowl-Your flour baking soda and salt excluding the chocolate chips.
Then take a separate larger bowl (after the butter or coco oil is slightly warmed up and blended then strained with your kava as i stated with med grind)mix your other ingredients also excluding the chocolate chips together-Your butter, egg, sugar and vanilla.
After your done with that add your dry ingredients in portions and fold in the chocolate chips as your stirring to the large bowl until you have a workable dough; at this point I recommend you preheat the oven to 350 and throw your dough in the freezer for 10-15 minutes because as the recipe I'd been following stated, it'll give it a chance to firm up.
Once taken out of the freezer simply form the dough into balls, put them on an ungreased cookie sheet and bake for 8-10 mins.
That's it your done.
Where I screwed up a bit during this process was not adding the med grind kava to the butter and straining as I'd written in this recipe but doing it after the dough was already prepared with separate coco oil then adding it to the last batch of cookies (about 4 cookies).
The way I slightly corrected my mistake was by keeping the last batch in the freezer whilst I was busy straining and processing the kava, then adding it to the dough and throwing the dough into the freezer yet again for a couple more minutes.
This can all be avoided by performing the recipe as I've now written it.
In all I used 6 tablespoons of pre-groged and air dried kava with about 5 tablespoons of fresh unused kava.
Unexpectedly they've come out rather strong per one cookie given the fact I was worried they'd only slightly work if at all because only a few kavalactones are soluble in fat alone.
Though I figured just like grog, the agitation from squeezing the kava through a strainer might force the other kavalactones out.
Who knows if that's what happened and maybe next time when I follow the recipe as it should've been with either micronized or with med grind it'll be a more exact result.
if it'd all been done properly this would've turned out much less extensive but I just had to throw a wrench in my plans ....maybe I just like to give everyone more to read.
Here's the most important part.
Next picture is of my kava cookies and I have to say they taste and look more scrumptious than the other cookies....probably because of the coco oil, which's what I'll be using the next time I make cookies.
I hope everyone's Chocokava's don't just entice the taste buds but instill the relaxation I've been bequeathed from these sweet morsels.
