Kava Curious
Hi all,

I could really use some advice. I have been using Kava for about 2 months now and I’m definitely through the RT phase. However, whenever I take Kava I get extreme nausea, heart palpitations and feel flushed. As you can imagine, this has made using Kava very unenjoyable for me- however, the effects and heady feeling are great.

I am using Hawaiian Moi and Fijian – both noble. I typically use ½ cup of kava prepared traditionally in 2-3 cups of water and then mixed with almond milk. I take a 4-6 ounce shell every 15 minutes or so until the batch I’ve prepared is gone. I get a great “heady” feeling but the side effects are awful. For instance, I took Moi last night and woke up at 3am thinking I was going to have a heart attack because my chest was so tight. It took me over an hour to calm myself down and go back to sleep.

Just so you are aware, I am also tapering off of Xanax for general anxiety disorder. I typically take 1-2mg per day (never with Kava) usually in the AM or at night. I try not to take the Xanax until at least 4 hours after my last Kava drink. Up until last week I was averaging 2-2.5mg of Xanax per day. I also take Zoloft daily.

Can anyone explain these feelings? I really want Kava to work for me as I have a problem with alcohol and don’t want to drink anymore. I’m just really concerned that something bad might happen- namely a heart attack. My last alcoholic drink was on Sunday and on Monday I had about 4 shells of Moi. It hit me really hard- so hard in fact that around 6:30pm I had trouble breathing and went to the ER for chest pain. They did an EKG and everything was ok but they did give me 1mg of Ativan to relieve the anxiety. I am really scared but don’t want to give up on Kava just yet. I need to stop drinking alcohol and don’t see any other alternatives (I tried AA and hated it).

Has anyone else experienced these side effects? Any recommendations?

You may want to try a more sedative kava. Moi and Fijian kavas are typically the most energizing and heady kava types. Try something like Boroguru and see how that effects you.

Thank you for the advice. Do you know if KavaBoy is would be good? I ask because I have some that I have not tried yet.

Sounds good. Next time I try I'll use the Kavaboy instead to see how it feels. I think I'll wait for the weekend though so my work is not so badly affected. Hopefully it works as I bought a pound of the Hawaiian Moi and 1 and 1/2 pounds of Kavaboy and I'd hate to have wasted all that money. Thanks again!

Hey jetsman, I have no decent advice being a noob to this, but I feel for your situation. Have you tried mixing the kava with just water? I know that some people's digestive systems don't mix too well with almond milk. Maybe just another variation you could throw in and try out.

I would be a little concerned that you're mixing Xanax and Zoloft with the kava. All your receptors and neurotransmitters are firing in all directions and maybe your body doesn't quite know what to do. Even though you're taking Xanax and kava at different times your receptors are not functioning as they normally would. Coupled with the Zoloft which is trying to happify your serotonin you could be experiencing something akin to serotonin syndrome. Please be careful. Don't know how much zoloft you're taking. Can you slowly taper before trying kava again?

Oh and you're having some alcohol too? If you don't want to quit the kava - and I don't blame you,it's good stuff - I suggest cutting way back on the amount you're drinking until both the Xanax and alcohol are out of your life. And I know that won't be easy. But you don't want to go to the ER again and be given yet more benzos. Be careful. .....

Wow- that is awesome advice! I just looked up seotonin syndrome and almost all of the symptoms I have are on there- it makes a lot of sense! I had my last dose of Zoloft on Monday and am going to discontinue using it. I am tapering down on my Xanax and plan to be done with it by early next week. I'm also going to not drink alcohol. My plan is to try Kava again next week- when I'm off of everything else to see if the results are any better. I will post my results on here to share. Thank you again!

You're welcome. My doc tried to put me on anti-depressants but within days of starting them I exhibited signs of SS! My serotonin levels were obviously fine.
Another word of caution - depending on your dose and length of use DO NOT cold turkey off your Zoloft. You need to taper off gradually to avoid discontinuation syndrome.
Good luck!!

Yes seriously, taper off of the ssris as you would a very dangerous one, if you think you can handle two withdrawls at once go for it, but be careful just dropping anything except opiates. All others are very dangerous to just quit... Ecspecially alchohol and ssris and benzo lol.. take it one at a time. I've heard people getting flush from alchohol and kava to close together...
