Any experience with Passionflower or Valerian Root?

I have a family member who uses passion flower.  They are from a brand called "Nature's Answer" and the dosage is 2 caps, 2x daily.  It works very well as an anxiolytic.

I actually bought a passion flower plant from one of those construction supply/outdoor stores. It was around $26.

I made a tea with some of the leaves and it seemed to make me feel a little different.

Unfortunately I didn't get it out the planter pot soon enough and it died.

I used to use valerian a lot. I really liked mixing it with kava. If you're looking for a mild anxiolytic. Try calm advantage. It's got msm, 5 htp and something else. Works great for mild occasional anxiety and is all natural.

I've heard great things about Theanine, in particular the 'Suntheanine' form. I plan on ordering some shortly. What brand do you use and how many mg would you take per day? Would you combine it with anything else? Thanks

Thanks, mos3z. I've seen a few people recommend talking ~200g as a therapeutic dose for anxiety but I'll start small and adjust from there. Any brand recommendations for theanine, and valerian root also?

Hey midas, most any brand that uses sun theanine should be good, I forget which brand i get, i think i get whole foods store brands currently

are you looking at valerian for sleep or anxiety?

My personal experience using it for sleep is that long term use actually caused minor depression, this happened to my wife and father in law also.

let me know if its for sleep or anxiety, i can recommend other supplements, ive tried a lot

Thanks for the info, mos3z. It's anxiolytic herbs that I'm interested it.

I tried buying the actual raw, dried, valerian roots in my health food store and made a tea from them but have never have gotten any effects from it. Same thing with lemon balm leaves, though perhaps the stuff that particular store is selling isn't from a good source. Any recommendations you have would be greatly appreciated :)

What works best for me is l-theanine, also inositol works great but in high doses hurt my stomach a little.

I found out that my adrenals werent functioning properly, in that case adaptogenic herbs are helpful for healing the adrenals (which can help with anxiety if you arent producing enough hormones to battle stress) For this I was taking ashwaganda (also called withania), rhodiola, ginseng, etc... There are several companies that make decent combos with all of these futurebiotics has stressassist that looks good (havent tried that but a good company) the idea behind these herbs is that it will help heal over a longer term like 1-2 months before u notice, but for immediate results use l-theanine and inositol, so u take them both together

kava works great for anxiety too, but if you have adrenal issues I would take something to heal them versus kava which sort of covers up the issue.

You need to make lemon balm tea fresh, otherwise it is drastically less potent. I find it's that way with most herbs.

You might also try rieshi. I grew some and made a couple batches of tea. Amazing stuff. I'll post some pics if anyone's interested. It's a little sedating. The effects are hard to describe, it's one of those things you just have to try.

Mos3z: The only adaptogen I've tried was Rhodiola Rosea (Jarrow Brand) and it didn't do anything noticeable for me, I think I was only on it a month or so, so perhaps I should have stuck with it a bit longer. I never even considered that I might have an adrenal problem, I might mention that to my GP next time I see him. I have a bottle of inositol here so I might just order some suntheanie and see how that works for the time being. Thanks again for all the info :)

Stevev: I just looked up rieshi, it looks interesting but I'd imagine it's very hard to buy it fresh in Europe. Where did you get yours from?

Hey midas,

Just to let you know most adrenal problems such as adrenal fatigue arent recognized by most general practitioners. But i can attest first hand that it is a real problem. Most GP only do one type of adrenal test that checks for a very severe form of adrenal problems where it is life threatening. There isnt a 100% reliable test to check for lower levels of insufficiency, but if you go to a naturopathic doctor they can test for lower levels, and while the tests might not be 100% accurate they can at least point you in the right direction. For my tests it showed that my adrenal levels were incredibly low and after taking herbs for a long period the retests showed a gradual increase in the levels until I am now back to within normal ranges. I have heard the analogy that not too many years ago chiropractors were looked at in the same way but now it is a widely accepted practice.
