A UH, Hilo Professor researching Korean immigrants on Hawai'i Island gave this to me.
And yes I was surprized that--
1- a person likely from Korea was growing commercial kava in 1925;
2- the Hilo newspaper used the correct Hawaiian word- awa-- with no mention of kava;
The Goddess Pele chose to visit an 'awa farmer does not surprize me since 'awa
is something, in Old Hawai'i, that was offered to her.
This is forgotten, mostly, today as she is given Gin now!
