Yes, it is much stronger than just kneading. I think it really helps break down the cells and crush the kava - much like the rolling pin method. I have a 2 TBS long handled scoop (for scooping out coffee out of bags) that I first use to measure the medium grind then I use it to literally mash the kava in the bag after soaking for a minute or two in hot tap water (if I have the time) or room temperature water if I don't want to wait to drink it. This typically gets me enough extraction where a second wash is almost not necessary. I still usually do a second wash and add it to the first so because the first wash is pretty strong and bitter so mixing the 2nd with the 1st mellows out the taste but I doubt it adds much more kick.

If you are buying nylon bags, be sure to look for food-grade products.
I got burned buying nylon bags for industrial use. Was not comfortable making kava with something made in a factory not intended for food products.
