First real experience- delayed onset?

Hi everyone, first post.
I think I had my first real kava experience last night. I bought koniak kava from BKH a few months back. I've been using it occasionally but was a little concerned because I didn't realize this strain was questionable in terms of safety. All my experiences were as I expected based on the reports of others. I would experience a subtle but very real serene state of mind after consuming. I thought I as one of the ones that didn't experience reverse tolerance. I was wrong lol.

Last night I made a brew using a small amount (1 tbsp) of root and drank it before going for a walk with my friend. I felt the immediate sense of calm like usual. I had almost forgotten I had drank the kava until about an hour or hour and a half later I was floored. It caught me off guard with the intensity! I've never felt my muscles relax so much, and my eyelids were so incredibly heavy. I would not have been safe for me to drive in that state. It worried me at first because I didn't expect this strong of an effect, but the feeling was so enjoyable I quickly just relaxed and let the kava do it's thing. The mental effects were really strong as well, I felt exalted.

I am very impressed. I bought borogu kava which should be here later this week. I'm going to save koniak for special occasions.
Is it unusual to have the delayed reaction? It was my understanding that kava hit you pretty rapidly.

I also can have a delayed reaction. Especially when I've eaten recently before hand. Also state of mind tends to play a huge role in the way kava can work. If I'm ready to relax and I drink my kava, then it's...well... it's bed time. If not, say I drink kava right after an extremely suspenseful movie I run the risk of not feeling it at all. It was two weeks ago that I watched Captain Philips, then drank my kava, and I felt nothing...absolutely nothing. So it all depends. Kava by nature tends to be a light-duty experience. We're not medical professionals, but I doubt anyone would suggest you drive after kava. Heck I wouldn't drive after taking benadryl, it's just always best to err on the side of caution.

Also Welcome to the forums!

Those heavier kavalactones, like in Koniak, take longer to kick in all the way. To me, the surprising part is that you had such a strong effect from only 1 TBSP...but I'm just jealous.

About a week ago I had a BAD delayed reaction to a mix of 2/3 cups melo melo and 2/3 cups koniak to 5 cups of water. I normally drink 4 oz at a time and feel it within 10 minutes or so, but after 8 ounces and a half hour I hadn't felt anything, so I slammed the rest of it down (about 10 or 12 oz) in like a five minute period. About an hour later I was so messed up it was unreal. It felt like someone slipped me a concoction of cocaine, mushrooms and weed. After getting help off the couch, I forced myself to throw up and then ate a pork chop and chugged a bunch of water. I spent the rest of my evening in my bed waiting for the effects to wear off. Learned my lesson!:)

Thanks for the welcome.

Brief segment about me: I'm a 25 year old graduate student in biology. I occasionally suffer from anxiety but would like to avoid addictive benzos and alcohol. I'm very interested in the medicinal use of native plants around the world.

I was really surprised 1 tbsp had that effect as well. I was planning on dosing a small amount of kava daily until my new batch of borogu arrives so I could experience it more fully. I ended up getting a strong experience of the koniak anyways, and I loved it.

I always hear kava compared to alcohol but my experience last night was much better. It put my in an extremely creative state of mind.
