From Wikipedia entry on "Kava":

"In Vanuatu, Tudei ("two days") kava is reserved for special ceremonial occasions and exporting it is not allowed."

They claim to source from Vanuatu

On the plus side it's only $113/lb plus shipping ($4.49 per 2.12 ounces, or about $33.75 total on the shipping), but on the downside it looks like kitty litter. But it's Ceremonial Kava!!!

Properly speaking, though, unless I am gravely mistaken, the term "Ceremonial Strength" means nothing at all, does it? Or if it does it only refers to certain types of tudei?

In "Origin and Distribution" there is a category called "Custom", which refers to Vanuatu kava that is reserved for ceremonial purposes, but is not drunk every day. It is a different category from "Tudei", but I have never heard of it being for sale from any retail importer. On the other hand, in Fiji and Tonga, kava is often consumed during a formal ceremony. I think in Vanuatu that was more often the case in the past, whereas in modern times Vanuatu nakamals are much less formal. So in that sense you could say that all Fijian or Tongan kava--all of which is noble--is "ceremonial grade", and likewise Vanuatu noble kava could have been consumed in ceremonies in the past, or possibly occasionally still in the present. So, really, who knows what that "ceremonial strength" label means. It probably means nothing, just marketing copy. The blurb on that site also says that "Brooklyn Kava only sources the finest kava directly from farmers in Fiji. This kava root powder is 100% noble kava direct from our chosen suppliers residing in a special family farm in Fiji and always tested for premium quality and freshness."

Marang from Tanna is a "medicinal" with a 452xxx chemotype. It was available before cyclone Pam and I've consumed a bit of it. High DHM made it the sort of kava that you just drink one or two shells and then you're done for the night. It was good kava for meditating in the dark. Not terribly social, though not tudei either.

Anyway, i wouldn't read too much into the ad copy on this Brooklyn Kava.

I actually stopped in Brooklyn Kava as well as Kavasutra when I was on tour in the northeast. I also bought a 1/4lb of this stuff for $15 when I ran out of my beloved Squanch waka. Anyways, the bartenders knew absolutely nothing about kava and the kava they sold. It wasn't the weakest grog I've ever had but it in no way compared to a few shells of Squanch or some good Isa.

I ended up spending most of my time at Kavasutra during my stay in New York. They served some seriously strong kava and had awesome daily deals. I was lucky enough to be there on black friday and god almighty did I get slapped (11 shells for $20!!). So slapped in fact that I accidentally left my backpack at the nakamal which contained my computer and all of my toiletries. The owner was nice enough to ship it back. Sorry to get way off topic but in conclusion, don't waste your time at brooklyn kava or waste your money on their powder.

That's sad to hear. I went to Brooklyn Kava as well as Kavasutra a couple years back. Both were decent, but I actually liked Brooklyn Kava's kava a little better. Sounds like they've let quality slip.

Didnt know that Brooklyn Kava is apparently from copyright at bottom of page, same as "Kava King", also learned from their 'about page' that he sold Kava to Whole Foods for 3 years. http://www.brooklynkava.com/about

Doesn't sound right that a very public brick and mortar kava bar would sell root at 113/lb without shipping.. pretty cray cray. And I agree regarding "ceremonial" kava being potentially noble in fiji & tonga but from what I understand it is ceremonial in Vanuatu because its daaang powerful, potentially hepatoxic and not intended for daily/common use... only special occasion. Kinda like Polish plum brandy (sliwowica), its very good, very strong, and DEFINITELY is a head-wrecker if consumed too much, only for sipping and special occasion.

Final note: their website is not https (**foghorn**)

Hi, this is Nick from Brooklyn Kava.
A few things:
Ceremonial Strength was just a branding term we came up with. We have tested our main supplier a bunch of times to confirm that they sell noble kava.
We sell pounds of kava for $49.99 + 4.49 shipping on amazon. If you only buy 1/4 a lb it is more expensive. I don't think anything is wrong with that or somehow deceptive.
Brooklyn kava was once called "king kava" before we had a bar. Kava king is a different company.

Good post, thanks for getting involved. The term 'ceremonial strength' has become synonymous with ceremonial tudei kava. So, unfortunately for your product, if it is truly noble, some people will infer that it's tudei because of the name.

Would you be willing to share the CoA or test results? That would be admirable and might even lead to some extra sales.

I'm a fan of branding that tells...
- Where the kava is from. The island, not just the country.
- What cultivar(s) are in it.
- The lewena/waka ratio.
- The age of the plants.

Imagine going into a bar and getting a glass of wine the way they serve kava...

"This is the finest ceremonial wine, made from the fruits of the grape plant."

"What kind of wine is it?"

"My dawg, this is, uh... France Wine. It's the best kind of wine, yo! Wanna try it mixed up with some pineapple juice?"

France wine comes from Algeria.

It's basically tinto de verano or kalimotxo with more of a ceremonial gallic/Algerian flair.

Pineapple juice would be taking it too far. Maybe pineapple Fanta.... maybe...
