My wife read some link about supplements that are bad for you and of course there's one on there that says Kava will kill your liver. I'm curious if you guys could point me at some info that speaks the truth about Noble Kava in terms of ones liver. I'm not worried about it, but she's hassling me.

Thanks!

Mathias Schmidt analyzed all the case reports (83 of them) of "liver damage" in great detail. He found that only a small handful of those cases appear to be related to kava. Many of them involve patients who used multiple substances or alcohol in addition to kava. He concludes:

"It appears likely that certain types of kava products have the potential to cause a rare immune-mediated liver damage with an extremely low frequency of occurrence. The type of reaction that occurs appears to be typical of drug-induced liver damage, a phenomenon that can occur after the intake of many of the prescription and OTC drugs commonly available throughout the world. However, the frequency of hepatotoxicity for kava is, on current information, substantially lower than for these conventional drugs."

This table summarizes his findings about the case reports:

3 out of 83 cases possibly connected to kava.

This table compares the incidence of liver damage due to kava vs. due to prescription benzodiazapines:

Yeah, you've got a better chance of being abducted by aliens than suffering liver damage. Of course, if you have really overdone the kava, you might not care about being abducted.
