Grams per shell

I usually drink my kava unfiltered because straining
Delivers a lower dose of kavalactones, but it would be nice to have a smoother drink sometimes. I’m not sure how to do the math. If 30g works for me unfiltered, how many grams would I have to strain out for the same effect?

you can reach similar potency in my experience and avoid many of the undesirable side effects that come long term with not straining. I'd ya your going to need around 75-80 grams to a liter or so and will want to strain for etleast 10 min in warm water.

30 grams strained makes a strong shell. I consider a shell about 200ml and like to put 7 to 14 grams kava in that much so that after four or five of them I'm still feeling social rather than tired sleepy from having four or five 30 gram shells. I brew 56-60grams in a liter of water and spend a lot of time rehydrating the root and squeezing it in the strainer to get the most out of it. Sometimes I brew significantly more or less, like 45g/L or 90g/L for mild or very strong kava. However straining it makes it more potent I learned, because the bulk of the kavalactones are embedded within the root chunks and flakes and come off into the brew more easily with emulsification techniques.

Kava is smooth when strained, please try it out. If you are having trouble finding a strainer which supports soak and squeeze repeatedly, you can try agitating and stirring powerfully the kava for no less than five minutes. No blender, you want the grind size to remain the same. Then strain and drink.

Trust me doing traditional kneading and squeezing for 15-20min in warm water, Maybe with some soy milk, is best. I do about 10 heaping tablespoons a day, I guess around 80-100g?

Ten heapers @Blergs ? I have found through experience that a heaping tablespoon is two tablespoonz - so my scale reads 7g for level 1Tbsp and 14g for 1 heaped mountainous Tbsp. 16 is a cup equaling 113g. If you are having the equivalent of 20Tbsp, that would be 140 grams kava per day, seems like a lot, maybe you have a little less?

That much kava per day? I'm close yet not that much. How do you prepare your lava @Blergs ? What kind of root are you ordinarily drinking?
Yeah lol. I like my kava, plus covid and lockdowns the past 2 yrs sucks and I'm mostly home so .
I usually split about 10 heaping tablespoons into 3-4 doses throughout day.
I like to do traditional prep-
80% warm-hot water, 20% soy milk. And knead and squeeze the crap out of it for about 20min in big bowl, then in another with about 1/3rd amount of water I do the same for second wash and mix it all together.

Lately I've been using mostly ofa's kava and Bula kava distributors (Canada).
Ofa's at 5kg order increments is cheaper than most around here. But I'm also working with a guy right in Fiji at the moment to import kava from him. It's half-1/3rd the price of the marked up prices on the vendor list. Just doing alot of permit and registry crap at the moment The past couple weeks, to get it on the way. Such a big hassle .

I also have 3lb of kava vinaka on the way to try out as I've heard they are nice. It only lets me order in 3lb increments though on site which sucks.

What do you use and how much?

I put the medium grind of KWK Pouni’Ono, Loa Waka, and Borongoru through a sieve and set aside the larger pieces. It came out to 69g total. I just used room temp water as that’s what I have but I made 4 washes of it over the course of an hour.

I have drunk 2 mugs so far starting about 45min ago and I am starting to notice my breathing deepen and the chronic pain and anxiety ease up a bit. The drink is certainly smoother, but with limited finances it is difficult to use so much more root for effect.

I did enjoy the kneading and thought how much I’d enjoy sharing the effort with others and perhaps singing as we work as I saw some Vanuatan tribal people doing in a documentary. The kneading itself was like a stress ball and I think it accentuates the kavalactones. Psychologically speaking, that is.

I appreciate the responses. Time for another mug.

I finished the fourth mug and I have a more pronounced sensation than in previous attempts at filtered drinks but I’m not in the kava as much as I would like. At least I’m not seeing double and feeling nauseous. It’s likely that had I drunk the same amount in half the time I’d be closer to the experience I’m aiming for.

Nevertheless, the pain and anxiety are not as bad as before. I also took 45mg each of CBDA & CBG on top of some abv, and the combination seems to be working well. May still take a Borongoru booster of 15g unfiltered.
