It's a pleasure to meet you all!

My name is Austin and I am new to the Kava community and the personal use of this plant. I have been well-informed of the research and culture surrounding piper mythesticum for some time now, but it was not until a week ago did I make my first purchase and a couple days ago did I try my first dose.

I had made the beginner mistake of trying various store bought kavas in the past, which produced no effects. However, a week ago I made a purchase of a 1/2 lb of Nambawan Kava root powder; Shout out to Bula Kava House for the hookup! I try to maintain a high level of self respect and stay well-informed when it comes to putting food, supplements, and substances in my body, however I am a bit embarrassed to say that I was very naive with my first kava experience. It was very intense and very unforgiving.

So as a beginner here I would appreciate anyones advice and criticism on my kava experience and I will do my best to explain what happened. :)
My first question is has anybody experienced any adverse reactions specifically insomnia, restlessness physically and naseau which led to vomitting hours after consuming?

This experience occurred around 12am after coming home from work. I chose to follow the instructions on the package and dosed out 2 tablespoons of kava in about 8 ounces of warm almond milk and kneaded for 10 minutes in a nut milk bag. I than drank the liquid and waited about 15 minutes for my next dose. I definitely noticed some subtle effects and my curiosity and impatience took the lead from that point on. For the next dose I took 2 tablespoons and finely ground in a nutribullet blender and than added 8 oz of warm almond milk and periodically pulsed for the next 10 minutes. Instead of straining through a nut bag however, I strained through a wire mesh cooking screen, which left much more kava residue and gulped it down. After this dose I noticed pronounced effects and repeated another dose about 10 minutes later. 10 minutes after that I repeated another dose and than cannot remember if I repeated another or not. I do remember though before stumbling to bed that I felt very inebriated. My head was buzzing, I had an incredible body high and there was pronounced euphoria that I did not expect to experience. I was definitely f'ed up on the kava (if you could even call it that). However I soon realized after crawling into bed around 2 am that my body was extremely restless, as if I had to move and twitch my muscles and could not relax. My stomach felt full and a bit bloated, I noticed a little naseau and I was in no way ready to sleep. So for the next couple hours as the kava wore down I tossed and turned. I drank several nighttime teas and took a dose of an herbal supplement for sleep. All the usual methods that would usually knock my ass out had zero effect. It was almost if the kava was exhibiting reverse effects on my system. Long story short I was up until about 7 am where I vomitted for a couples minutes before about a half an hour later I was finally able to pass out.

This reaction to kava in no way turns me away. I recognize in various ways how I made easy beginner mistakes. I drank too much kava overall and I did not wait long enough between doses. Other possible explanations I have are that choosing milk, especially almond milk with the kava was a bad choice. I also chose to blend and then strain through a pretty open mesh filter, so I consumed quite a bit of the actual kava root fiber which could have contributed to my negative experience. It was also naive of me to knock back each dose considering this was my first experience and I also could have done better to choose a less potent kava strain than "Nambawan" for my first time. All in all I look forward to better, more positive experiences with kava and am open and willing to hear any advice and criticism you guys have for me. What did I do wrong? Where could I have done better in my preparation, dosing, etc?

Thank you all!

I was going to reply, and then you answered all of your own questions in the end.::ricky:: (y)
I'll re-read it tomorrow, when I'm not so tired. But for now, don't give up, you've got some good root. Just give it some time and take it a bit slower on your next attempt.

It is recommended that you take 20-30 minutes between shells. And when I say shell, I'm talking about 4 oz of Kava. Give the Kava a chance to work and then stop when you feel the effects. Practice makes perfect. One more thing, make sure you are not drinking Kava that is blended with Tudei. It has adverse effects on some. Remember, you don't pound Kava like you pound beers. It is anti-therapeutic. Just listen to your body as you gulp your shells and stop when you feel the good effects. One good thing, looks like you are over the reverse tolerance thing.:D

Love. Like. Crazy.
Yeah.I found I overdid it a bit in the beginning and ended up with the same ill feelings.Since then I have slowed down and gauge my drinking with how my body responds.Hence sipping micro or spacing shells out and it works much better. I still go a little overboard from time to time but seldom get nauseous.I have switched to pure noble kavas and that has helped tremendously. Some people can get by with Tudei or Tudei laced kavas. But me not so much.Especially if I drink a lot of it!:LOL:Anyways---welcome to the forums!!!

Thanks for the warm welcomes and all the helpful advice everyone! Its greatly appreciated!
So far I have consumed my Nambawan kava on two separate occasions and I am happy to report both experiences were pleasant and successful. Ive dropped the dosages and waited at least 20 minutes before consuming the next dose, in 2 tablespoon increments. I definitely notice a difference when waiting longer; I did not realize some of the effects can take up to 30 minutes + to take full effect. Also instead of using almond milk, I am using water. Instead of chugging I have been sipping each dose for about 5 minutes. I notice however that I am needing much more doses to feel full effects compared to my first go around with the "toss and wash" method (thank you Deleted User for pointing this silly newbie mistake out) :).

I do not know if this question is good to ask in reply to this thread but I will go ahead and ask anyway.
My next question, as I continue my Kava journey is how long did it take for the reverse tolerance to go away? Mine thus far has me up around 10 tablespoons and even that I feel could be more. Also, is there a good way in your experiences to determine if you did the preparation method correctly? A lot of people say their whole mouth and even face sometimes goes numb but all Ive really noticed is the tip of my tongue going slightly numb. Could this also be due to different kava strains?

Again, I really appreciate it and look forward to getting to know you all! Namaste!

The reason for my interest is purely human curiosity. Therefore I was interested more in its recreational value. I have read that kava does not have a profound effect on mental clarity and this intrigued me because I value my meditation and ability to maintain conscious awareness throughout my day. My experience thus far with kava has not hindered my mental clarity but I do notice it produces effects which can easily become attached to so at the very most kava will be a "once in a blue moon" ritual, if I choose to continue using in the future. For right now I will continue experimenting safely and like you have all mentioned try to allow the kava to work with me.

Yes, @Aco651 wellcome.jpg to the Kava Forums. You have come to the right place. Keep up your experimenting. One must allow Kava to find a place in there lives. Much love. Roaddog....

Hi Austin, sounds like you learned from your first experience. I just want to clarify that while it's generally good to avoid "pounding" kava like beers as Deleted User01 said, I think he means more in the sense of continuous drinking of beer after beer, to get more and more drunk. I say that because most of us DO chug each glass/shell of kava as fast as we can rather than sip it. So if you don't like the taste, you can chug your dose without feeling like you're abusing it.

How do you know if you're doing the prep method right? Well, there's only one great way to know, but that's tricky for someone new who may also be dealing with reverse tolerance. If you're following a specific method it's hard to really screw it up too bad though. Some things you can do to make sure you're getting the most out of your kava is kneading for a solid 10 minutes - making sure any clay-feel is gone from the kava, perhaps doing a second "wash" of the bag to get everything out, and drinking on an empty stomach.

Good luck with your continued experimentation!

Solomon gives me insomnia if I've had any caffeine before consuming it. So unpleasant is it that I do not want to see what the range is. I'm going to assume five, based on what we know about caffeine's half-life.
