if you're using an actual shell, the size can vary a bit...but i think the standard is something like 4-5 ounces.

That sounds about right from what I've had at the kava bar where they serve out of shells. A "double" shell seems to be equivalent to around 1 cup of water which is 8fl oz (I think).

Regardless, what really matters is how much kava you use and how much water you use. The amount of kava is obviously the most important, and then once you figure that out, you can use more water to dilute it to your liking. I seem to find that 3-4tbsps per cup of water is the best but that usually ends up in a pretty thick grog.

Anywhere between 100-200ml seems normal. A lot of kava bars in the islands don't even have real shells, just some plasticky thing. I have noticed some of these are very big!

I always buy a traveller for next mornings yeharr when leaving a nakamal in vila. 4 shells tops a 600ml coke bottle. Now I'm on the precipice of my maths here but 600 / 4 is 150ml & converted to imperial makes it 5 ounces.

That said I have 2 when I get home from work each day now & they are 17 ounces ea & as thick as mud... it just depends on the strength of the kava & your expected outcome.

Shells at Bula Kava House are 8 oz. That's pretty standard for a full shell in Vanuatu, Fiji, or Hawaii as well. Use 1/4 cup of root to a cup of water to make a kava with equivalent potency to what is served in the south pacific.

Just as a forewarning, if you are using a blender and go with Judd's amounts (I personally use the same amounts) some kavas will become really difficult to blend and might need a tad bit more water. I still experience this even with cold water and it doesn't seem to happen for any good reason (different kavas, inconsistently). Could be due to my blender not being a good one (I'd imagine Judd's is high-end) or that I blend on low and it's just not quite enough "ummph" to move the thick stuff around. My poor blender starts to make strange noises and only the stuff at the bottom half of the belnder gets blended.

Also, if you plan on using hot water, definitely use a little bit more water since the hot/boiling water preps always leave a very, very thick blend that makes blending difficult like ^
