How vigorous are you with your AluBall?

I just got my aluball a few days ago, but I've already used it several times. I started really gentle at first because of the warnings of breaking it. I've gotten more vigorous with it, but I still only fill it half full and the ball only impacts the top (very softly) maybe 1 out of every 6 or so shakes. I'm wondering what other people are doing: Super gentle? Just slamming the ball against the top, bottom, and sides, pretty hard? Or what?

I've had to replace my fair share of them, so I just make sure to fill water to at least 400mls (about 2/3 full). However, it seems the ball is designed so that when it's getting knocked around in there, the mesh itself is not actually coming into contact with anything. It was only when I started putting more than one ball in at once that I started having to replace them. I still do 2 balls with 3-4 TBS kava for each batch, but I just switch them out and do one at a time. Haven't had to replace one in about 4 months since I started doing that.

I've been having problems with the container leaking through the lid when I shake, so I haven't been doing it very aggressively. Iirc the instructions say to shake it with the lid down, and when I do it that way, the ball doesn't seem to hit as hard.

I triple aluball all the time and haven't had any problems. The only thing to remember is not to shake up and down when the shaker is empty or it can crack the base, go circular.

I think what breaks the aluballs is opening and closing them, not the shaking. When you grab the ball to unscrew it, you are putting pressure one the screens and they eventually separate from the plastic. I've never had an aluball crack. All of mine that have failed, have been due to one or more of the screens separating and then the Kava just flows out of the hole.

IMO, you are more likely to crack the shaker than the aluball. The plastic the aluballs are made of seems pretty durable.

That's an interesting idea. I've been aluballing for a long time and never had a ball break, but I'm always careful not to manhandle the screens when I open and close the ball.

Agreed! I have had mine for 8 months of nearly daily use and had no issues or blowouts. I am very careful when opening/closing the ball to not put pressure on the screens. It would be helpful if the ball had two little nubs to help open/close tightly without having to put your fingers in the screens... @Kavafied

I shake it pretty hard, at first I was afraid it would break but I haven't seen any signs of failure. I check the integrity of the screens after every use. It actually gets on peoples nerves how hard I shake my balls.

I shake it very vigorously, so fast the bottle is a blur for 60 seconds. I repeat this with another ball. I only use one ball at a time and I use a generic shaker bottle rather than the genuine one so that I don't have to worry about cracking the bottle, although that has yet to happen with the generic.

I blew the bottom right out of my first shaker doing concussion shells (no water in the shaker),literally a ball sized hole but since then I wised up and took some advice and I still have my second shaker and it works perfectly. The balls screens eventually tear from double balling but holding the shaker horizontal and shaking up and down limits the balls from impacting each other and tearing screens. Fine threads and a wide diameter make cross-threading the balls easy to do. Try turning counter clockwise till you hear/feel two clicks on the second click the threads are lined up, ready to be screwed together.
