Brief summary:
Depending on quality, the current price of kava in Port Vila is between USD$10 and USD$140 per kilogram.
Nakamals are going out of business due to high prices, leading to calls for a govt-set price ceiling. Some former kava-producing areas no longer supply kava due to the 2015 drought and current volcanic activity. Quality varies a lot and Nakamals need to be vigilant since it's very easy to be tricked into buying tudei kava.

Logistics is a major problem, leading to spoilage. Hygiene at Nakamals is a problem. Port Vila Nakamals alone go through an estimated two tonnes of green kava every day.

I really liked this part---"• Variety and quality: This is an everyday struggle and nakamal owners must be good at choosing the type of kava they dish out to customers at their kava bars otherwise one gets very easily tricked into buying two-day kava thinking it is of noble variety."
Even the Ni Vanuatu have to deal with "Is it Noble or is it tudei?"
Thanks for posting this, it is great to read articles like this. Aloha.
