Dr. Novella would do well to update this article to include the WHO Report to the Safety of Traditional Kava Report of 2016, not the 2007. Kava: a review of the safety of traditional and recreational beverage consumption. Also note the recent adopted by the US FDA of the WHO UN FAO Kava Standards in Codex alimentarius. Worth also noting is the State of Hawai'i "Awa as GRAS (generally recogized as safe food).
