Kava and Sleep

So you'll have been hearing me rave about the new Nene Kava from GHK. I really like the way I sleep with it. The other day I asked Kavadude if he used Kava to help him sleep and he gave me a very good answer. Kava can help you sleep. However, if you are having big problems with sleep, then you should have a Sleep Study done because you may have Apnea or some other potentially dangerous condition. I said to myself, "well said, that is why I always look at the members here as Kava Counselors". So how many of you members use Kava for sleep? Does it help or does it hurt? What Kava helps you sleep? Do high Kavain Kavas hurt your sleep? Forgive me if this is an open topic somewhere but sleep is very important to me.

They almost almost all help my sleep. It's one of the things I'm most thankful for. My 'natural' state often requires 1-3 hours of laying down watching TV to get my brain to shut up enough to sleep. Then I wake up in the middle of the night and can't fall back to sleep for another 30min-2hrs. That used to be nearly every night of my life and it actually made me somewhat dread the night. Alcohol can help me fall asleep a little easier, but I still wake up and have a hard time falling back to sleep. I could stay out partying til 3 or 4 am ... and be stuck awake by 7 or 8:30am, while everyone else sleeps until 11. I hated it.
But kava, gift that it is, makes me fall asleep quick, comfortably and easily. Then if I wake up in the middle of the night, I do the zombie walk to the bathroom - get back in bed...and knock out within minutes. My brain/body gets this effect with just about every kava, from any side of the spectrum. Even kava sessions that feel weak and slightly disappointing (usually heady kavain strains, since I seem to be highly tolerant) result in me having easier sleep. Of course, heavier stuff is more powerful in this regard. The only one that felt like it almost wore off completely by the time I slept was Kavaboy's Hinehina Tongan kava. But even still, it left me slightly better off than my completely natural state. Coincidentally enough, this is also one of the only full-on 'heady' kavas (probably no 2 or 5 the the 1st three chemotype #'s) that I actually felt the kavaininess from. I do have to use a lot more root than should be necessary though, for these types.
On rare occasions, kava will disprupt my sleep. Leaving me tossing around in some strange, detached sleep-limbo kind of state. I think sometimes it could be due to having bloating or painful trapped gas at the same time as being sedated. One is trying to wake me up, while the other is trying to keep me sleeping...and I get trapped in the middle.

I have horrible sleep apnea, I notice that even though my quality of sleep is awful (I never feel well rested because I stop breathing for around a minute at a time and it wakes me up), when I drink kava before I sleep I wake up feeling much more rested than when I don't. I assume it has something to do with some level of neuroprotection. Even if I wake up super dehydrated I feel better than I otherwise would have. High kavain Kava's even help to some extent. Of course they also make me want to just chill and watch TV instead of sleeping sometimes.

StinkWeed buddy I hope you're getting treatment for that, sleep apnea is no joke and will slowly damage your brain and cardiovascular system over time. This is why I recommend everyone with persistent sleep problems get a sleep study done. Kava can help greatly if you are having trouble getting to sleep or if your sleep issues are caused by anxiety (a lot more common than you would think) but there can be serious issues that need non-pharmaceutical/botanical treatment.

Kava has been very helpful but it doesn't complete the whole picture for me.

Along with kava I have taken these measures to help sleep:
• nailing a rubber-bottomed carpet to my door to absorb sound
• cutting up science project cardboard display things to fit tightly into my windows, blocking all sunlight
• 15mg time released melatonin
• playing movies with properly mixed audio and a slow pace (no loud gunshots or thrillers)
• no caffeine after lunch
• emergency ear plugs next to bed in case a loud person is in the house
• sometimes chamomile tea and Yogi Calming tea
• sometimes breath meditation in bed

Kavas with slightly more DHK seem to help me sleep better. I've been following your reviews on Nene, Deleted User01, and I might order some.

Some people with hearing problems talk so loud you can hear them next door. Some of my brothers snore so loud you can hear them from upstairs even with the doors closed. Ear plugs sound good to me. I only have to worry on the holidays and wine may have something to do with it. Hell , they may need a Sleep Study per KavaDude. Such loud snoring! Steve T. I would add that you really shouldn't be on the computer or even watch TV 30 mins prior to sleep. Something about the monitor. Maybe read a book before bedtime.
I like the nene but I also warn that it is not for daytime.

BTW Boroguru is the ultimate nightcap kava in my opinion. When I have boroguru it's pretty much lights out as soon as I hit the pillow.

Awesome post. Totally worth people with sleep problems look into proper sleep hygiene which I have found to be (almost) the most important aspect of fixing my notorious issues with sleep. (y)

Now if only it applied to pain... :( There's nothing that can keep me asleep for more than 2 hours now with my back issues, not even some schedule II time-released meds and .2mg of clonidine

I commented elsewhere regarding this but I'll say it here for good measure. Tried out the Nene again last night just chugged probably 12 oz of a light mix before bed last night and slept well and woke up this morning feeling ok even though I was really really tired and really stressed last night.

Almost all high K kavas make it harder to sleep, and I have major sleep problems. Boroguru or any high dhk/dhm kava helps quite a bit with it. My problem usually isn't getting to sleep, it's staying there. Wake up 4-5x a night even with kava but with the kava I fall right back to sleep. If I don't, well I just have a bit of kava and its all good.

The Zombie walk, I know it well. Zombie and Zombie out.
Ya, for sure, I do a zombie walk, usually to the fridge. I sometimes wake up and need a little snacky poo. :sneaky:. I know I'm bad, I'm really really bad, but sometimes I get the munchies. Usually just a cup of yogurt, or a piece of turtle pie, I like key lime too. (Its my kava zombie key lime pie, munchies walk.) You all telling me I'm alone on this?Much love Roaddog....

I sleepwalk to the fridge some nights. When I do, I usually grab a small handful of dark chocolate covered almonds. It seems weird, but eating a few seems to help me get back to sleep quickly. You would think it would have the opposite effect, but for some reason, doesn't. It's an unexplained phenomenon to me.

Well I never sleep walk. But I'm willing to take it up if there is some Key Lime Pie, Turtle Pie, or Chocolate covered Almonds waiting for me.:hungry:

I wonder if its something to do with your blood sugar being off balance? Dark chocolate almonds would probably do the trick and quick. I'd go for if I start feeling ill from skipping a meal or just not eating right. sounds really good right about now actually :hungry: had a light lunch and just water now until I hit up some Borogu within the hour now :woot:

Well the electric has been off in my town for hours. Kind of sucks I guess. Thank goodness I have a massive back up generator, and lots of solar panels. So I'm watching direct TV. and posting on line. But I bet I'm the only one, in my little town of 300. Got to love solar panels, and large battery packs. I tell you some of my hobbies come in handy. Much love. Roaddog....

Funny, I just read an article today in the newspaper about Microgrids. Big ole batteries attached to solar panels. By the way, I got some Alabama Wiggler here locally because they can take the heat. I threw them here and there. I put some in the compost trash cans (there are almost done). I checked them yesterday and the worms are still alive! So I'm hoping they will multiply and keep producing worm castings.

Well sounds like you have your worms going then. Way cool. Ya. I installed 1200 watts of panels, I ordered. that is powering the 12 large golf cart batteries, on my camper
( I designed the camper for off grid, homesteading)
I pump that right in the grid, after batteries are full. I have also installed a 10,000 watt generator, to run the house. I have everything hooked up to the proper switches, and breakers. Funny thing is, I have never took an electric class in my life. I just understand the numbers. Its important to know what loads wires will hold. Much love. Roaddog....
