I sold fine wines for some 10+ years, I know everything there is to know about it. The irony of life...

He's your enabler. That being said, what kind of grapes? I actually had 2 glasses of wine last night and bottled the rest in a lock top bottle. I'm very proud of myself for being sooooo mature. And now today I crave my kava. It was only a fleeting affair with wine. Weird dreams too.
It's red Cabernet. They just finished harvesting 10 tons of grapes last week.

I think I just found a wine consultant. :D Too bad I only need him twice a month. :(
Good deal Headgie, I love red. I had some petite sirah last night. I like to go off the beaten path. Man, if you could only get him to grow kava then the kava shortage would take care of itself. Say this 10 times, 10 tons of Kava Root. :woot:

I was drinking dangerous amounts of alcohol before I found kava. Because of this place, I discovered REAL kava, sold by good vendors. November will be 2 years since I touched alcohol, and it is 100% because of kava and this community. I owe a ton to this forum and to the vendors here.

I used to drink nightly for 4 or 5 years and gave it up and started drinking kava every night about 5 years ago. I wouldn't say I was physically dependant on alcohol, it was more mental. I still drink here and there but I don't really think about booze like I did. I'm drinking stone as we speak and its very nice ::tanoa::

So I know a lot of people use kava as a replacement for alcohol and I've seen more than a few times that you should avoid using kava with alcohol. How long should one wait between drinking alcohol and a kava session? Is it actually harmful to consume them relatively close to each other?

The reason I ask is I have an event coming up and I have to select several wines for it and I have my rep coming in to do some tastings to nail down what I want to serve with each course. I usually only get 1 or 2 half days off a week and on occasion I'll get a full day off or very rarely a full day and a half day so I like to try to make the most of what little time off I have and enjoy myself while working in the garden, on the house, etc. The day that I'll be doing the tastings happens to be one of those days; likely the only half day I will have that week, and I'd like to have some kava that afternoon/evening once I get finished. Any harm in that? Should I wait and if so for how long?

I'd say about 24 hours, based off the elimination time of kavalactones and alcohol.

In reality, there's no hard data on what you should do.

Well, that's a bummer. I was really looking forward to enjoying my half day off with some kava and getting some work done around the house.

Would you say there is some kind of threshold or would you say any alcohol should result in abstaining from kava for 24 hours?

Whats the reasoning behind not using one relatively soon, I guess within 24 hours, after the other?

I've drank Kava within a few hours of drinking alcohol, and I've heard a lot of anecdotal information about islanders doing it as well. The fear is that the liver processes both, and that there could potentially be harm. But as stated above, there is no hard evidence.

I think it could vary on people's metabolisms, but why take a chance?

I think the sequence is not symmetrical.

Drinking alcohol after a night of kava seems to work fine -- alcohol the night before, kava any time the next day,
seems to work OK (as long as you didn't massively overdo the alcohol).

The other way around is different. Kava seems to have a longer half-life in the system, so if having kava the night before,
wait a good 24 hours before EtOH. I've found that kava the night before, then a couple beers in the afternoon
(watching footbal, etc.) and I don't feel very well. Waiting until evening is better.
