Kava - Side Effect: Confused (and I haven't even tried it yet)

Kava Curious
Hello All,

I am really sorry that this is such a long post, I know nobody likes a long-winded new guy. I have put a lot of thought and effort into trying to understand Kava so I wanted to make sure I covered everything.

I am a Kava virgin and have been doing loads of online research on Kava and its uses/benefits lately. After spending nearly two weeks pouring over web pages, forums, user experiences and various Kava products I found myself more confused than ever. In fact, my research ran so deep that I found myself lost in the land of Google search results pages 5 and over, an unfamiliar place that is no doubt a path to the end of the internet itself. There are so many conflicting reports and first hand experiences about Kava. It seems like the more I try to learn the less I know, and the more my productivity at work drops (I did mention that most of my research has been while I’m in the office, right?). I have read enough to understand that this is probably the result of several factors ranging from quality and type of Kava to user preference and general misconceptions about this magical root.

Luckily my research also brought me here, and after reading over several threads I am feeling a little more confident in my "Kava Knowledge". This is when I knew that it was time to nut up and order some Kava, thinking that I have educated myself enough to not have dirt in a bag delivered to my door. (but you can be the judge of that). Keep in mind that I still have not tried Kava, and this is where my questions for you, the Kava Elders come in.

I should pause here to mention that the reason I started looking into Kava in the first place was for an [legal] alternative to alcohol. Ask anyone other than my mother and they will agree with me that I am not an alcoholic. I am not looking to Kava to help quell or replace an addiction. I’m just…tired of drinking. I’m tired of the hangovers, tired of feeling unhealthy, tired of my wife telling me to “put your pants back on we’re in an Applebee’s”. I am admittedly looking at Kava as a way to feel good, not as an alternative for anxiety or for trouble sleeping, although both of these would be welcome side effects.

So, onto the fun stuff! I purchased two different Kava products online and both have been delivered. The first Kava that I ordered was KavaDotCom Premium Powdered Vanuatu Kava Root Extract (16oz) (Noble) for $38.99. I know nothing about this brand other than what I found on a 10 second internet search. I bought this in the beginning stages of my Kava research when I was caught up in the excitement of trying Kava, and I liked the fact that I could order it on Amazon for the quick and free shipping. I ignored the hokie brand name as well as the crap Amazon reviews – only 2 reviews and neither seemed to know much about Kava in the first place.

My second purchase was Gourmet Hawaiian Kava’s Moi Micronized Kava (1lb) for $102.00. At first glance the price seems higher than other Kava’s online, but I found that this brand is well known and loved among veteran Kava drinkers, and throughout my entire research GHK brand is consistently called the best Kava out there - so I felt very confident with this purchase and know that I am getting the best quality that I can, really a no-brainer. The shipping was still very fast (4 days), especially considering it is coming from Hawaii to the east coast. I have also seen the owner Chris Allen (name?) lurking on these forums and in a Youtube video on Kava, so I knew I was buying from someone who really knows/cares what they are doing and is involved in the Online Kava Community, if that is a thing.

I have read all of the FAQs so some of these are just looking for personal preference, especially if you use the brand and or type that I am trying. My initial questions are (if anyone is still reading at this point):
1. Have any of you had experience with KavaDotCom brand?
2. Should I strain the micronized Moi or just drink it after mixing? (personal preference)
3. Is there any truth to the claim that fats in the blender (olive oil, milk, etc) or boiling helps make the Kava more effective?
4. What dose should I use for my very first cup of Kava (Tbs to Cup of Water).
5. Have most people here experienced reverse tolerance or is that uncommon?

Thanks for taking the time to read and for your help. I will finally be trying my Kava tomorrow night! I will update you all on the experience.

Hi,

Welcome to our little community! :)
GHK is fantastic. Good choice!
KavaDotCom doesn't seem to have a good reputation here.

I think you will find answers to your questions on micro prep, doses etc in this little article on kava prepration.

1. Have any of you had experience with KavaDotCom brand?
AFAIK poorly-regarded, avoid.

2. Should I strain the micronized Moi or just drink it after mixing? (personal preference)

There is no need to strain it. The reason the micronised costs so much is that they go to extra trouble to make it fine so it will dissolve easily. You can strain it if you really want to and it won't harm the drink much.

3. Is there any truth to the claim that fats in the blender (olive oil, milk, etc) or boiling helps make the Kava more effective?

Boiling makes it taste terrible and boiling it for a long period of time can destroy nearly all of the kavalactones. Fats haven't helped me, but other people swear by them.

4. What dose should I use for my very first cup of Kava (Tbs to Cup of Water).

There are various rules-of-thumb on the site. Personally, I use kava powder which requires a lot of kneading. I don't stop adding water until the powder is spent.

5. Have most people here experienced reverse tolerance or is that uncommon?

It seems that most people here have experienced it, I certainly did.

Try a tablespoon of the GHK!. See how ya feel .. make sure you have an empty stomach. But I recomend getting medium grind root. It's cheaper and same if not more potent technically

Welcome to the kava forums Prelohded. I would stay away from kava dot com and there sister companies, Kona kava farm being one of them. There are great vendors here on the Kavaforums so you will have no problem getting great kava.
The knowledge base on the kavaforums is vast and abundant, there are a lot of kava experts here so you will find all the answers to your questions.
You can also email me directly if you have questions at [email protected].
Again welcome to the forums and aloha from Hawaii.

I think that I was swindled into the kavadotcom product. If I'm not mistaken I think I saw a post somewhere on here that kavadotcom and kavaguru are the same company? Can anyone confirm this? In my quick research on kavadotcom I came across a review for the product on kava guru, which gave it a 5 out of 5 rating, that and my rush to buy something ultimately doomed me in. Is the stuff even worth keeping? Maybe I could use it to get past the reverse tolerance.

@prelohded - a lot of us fall into the trap of getting excited, and impulse ordering. Sounds like your well on track, that Moi will set you up well.
