KAVA USERS DATA THREAD - PLEASE POST!

I think having this thread is a great idea. I wonder if it may be useful to include the brand/source of the kava used before the symptoms developed. With so many variants, it may be that this reaction can be narrowed down to one brand or source. Just a thought.

Age: 33
Gender: F
General physical condition: Very good
Length of kava usage: 3+ years
Type (root, ground root powder, extract): Primarily ground root powder. Also have had various instants, candy, and extract, but infrequently.
Average amount per day/week: Probably 4-5 times weekly. Approx 3-4 8 oz cups per session @ 2 tbsp/cup.
Prep method (water, toss & wash, etc): Traditional soak, knead, and strain. No milk, soy, lecithin, etc, just water and kava strained well.
Straining method (if used): Nylon stockings. Did not strain ONCE (with very finely ground root) which is when issue started, but could have been coincidental since this was a one-time occurrence and have made extra sure to strain well since.
Other substances/medications used: Vitamins, etc. Occasional mj and beer drinker.
History of allergic reactions to anything? Never had a food allergy ever. Slight seasonal stuffiness but pretty mild.
Have you had an adverse reaction that you feel involved Kava? Yes
How serious? Not life threatening (no anaphylaxis) but seriously itchy, "sunburnt," swollen, and uncomfortable for 48 hours.
Did you stop using kava? Yes
Did the reaction go away? Yes, after 48 hours, however, any amount of kava still causes this reaction after almost 6 month break
How long?
Do you still use kava? Not currently
General comments, and anything pertinent I've overlooked? Onset of symptoms is approx 4 hours after ingestion. Treated with various OTC oral antihistamines (both pre-loading and post-onset) and topical hydrocortisone cream. Possible mild reduction of symptoms but redness, itching, and swelling definitely still present. No dietary changes. I highly doubt this is related to any specific brand. I'm a kava hoarder and I've tried them all. Trust me, I really didn't want to have to give up on kava but sometimes you've exhausted all of the options.

Hello I really hate to read this thread, because I really developed allergic reactions many times. I had this problem with Creatine, Tadafil (Cialis) and Vardenafil (Levitra) and Melanotan. Everything of this I used over long time and over time I developed allergic reaction. No problems at beginning but over time---> allergic reaction get stronger and so strong that it was horrible to take anything of this.

I also have an autoimmun decease: Alopecia areata since 2 years which get worse over time...

I went to a special doctor who uses electro Accupunctur (don´t know the correct english name). He measured all food I can eat and found out, that there are many things which are not good for me especially Wheat, onion and any kind of nuts. I never had allergic reactions on these but since avoiding them I definitively feel better. And he didn´t know my allergic reaction on the substances above and found out that I have to avoid them when we tested them. We also tested other substances I took.

Thats really interesting. Another friend with rheumatoid arthritis has tested food by him and when she avoids everything he said, she has nearly no problems anymore...

I´m really angry because I guess Kava belongs to the substances as well and I will develope allergic reaction over a year, because I already feel like I felt with all substances listed above: Kind of itchy, swollen and burning...Thats really bad especially because I really should avoid substances like this because they worsen my alopecia areata or support any other autoimmune reactions...Next time when I go to the doctor I will test Kava Kava, but this will take time and money.

Kind regards...

kind regards...

I am sorry this has happened to you. I got the rash from over using ,and had to stop for a month. My kava buddy remains allergic and has stopped totally. Some things in life are so sad:-(

Age: 43

Gender:, Female

General physical condition:, Very good

Length of kava usage: Nightly for about a month

Type (root, ground root powder, extract): Ground root powder

Average amount per day/week: Approximately 1-2 tablespoons nightly in about 16 ounces of water

Prep method (water, toss & wash, etc): I steep the Kava in very warm water using a muslin bag. I then knead it for about 10 minutes and add soy milk or soy lecithin and a little coconut water. I tried using a blender and straining a couple of times but like the kneading method better.

Straining method (if used):, I don't strain. Sometimes there's a little bit of powdered root at the bottom of the cup but not much.

Other substances/medications used: Xanax Extended Release 1 mg at bedtime (trying to get off this stuff which is why I tried Kava), Ibuprofen (about 1200mg daily, but only recently, due to a jaw injury), alcohol occasionally, Benadryl and Zantac (using these to combat the hives that started on Saturday)

History of allergic reactions to anything?:, Minor seasonal allergies ( no medication needed), possible rash reaction to pine sap as a child

Have you had an adverse reaction that you feel involved Kava? I'm afraid so...

How serious? I've used Kava nightly for about a month. It worked wonderfully on my anxiety and insomnia. I'm more relaxed in general. On Friday night, I tried Kava Leweena from Fuji Emporium. Prior to this, I'd been using Waka Kava from Kona Kava Farm or Fuji Emporium. I started feeling a little itchy on Saturday morning. By Saturday night, I was even itchier and when I showered the skin on my back and shoulders appeared to be dry. This isn't unusual during the winter, so I wasn't concerned. I also felt kind of overheated, but attributed this to running a lot of indoor errands while wearing my coat. ,By Sunday, I had some small hives on my back and chest. Today, I've got even more hives on my back, stomach and chest. They seem to have skipped my neck, but are on my face, especially along the jawline and right cheek near my nose.

Did you stop using kava?:, I won't use it again until the hives clear up

Did the reaction go away? How long? I'm hoping it goes away soon!

Do you still use kava? If this clears up, I plan to use it again ASAP, but maybe not every night.

General comments, and anything pertinent I've overlooked?:, I had no problems until I tried the Leweena type Kava. My skin was a bit dry, but this is normal during the winter. This doesn't look anything like a typical scaly Kava rash that long-term users get. A nurse friend looked at me and said it's definitely hives. I'm hoping this is just a reaction to the Leweena and I can go back to the Waka as soon as it passes. I'd be willing to put up with a few hives on my body, but not all over my face! I hope I can resume the kava again because I've never felt so relaxed and calm. I've never slept this well in my life! Any thoughts? Please help!

Try something from Bula Kava House or Paradise LittleMac. You are also pumped full of other medications at the same time. Not good.

This seems to be happening more than I had originally thought. Nice idea for a thread. Maybe it will lead to some answers.
