15g of medium grind mixed in 250ml of water is a small amount. Id then say it's your personal chemistry that didnt agree with it, or maybe some other factors.

Melo is different, but cant guatantee your body will agree with it. It's the most popular cultivar at our partner kava bar in Auckland though.

I would suggest following @Alia 's advice. Prep 250-300ml to your 15g. Strain it well in Kava Europe's strainer (or equivalent, note both KE and our strainers are customised to our grind type, if you use other strainers they may not be fine enough to filter kava well). Drink it all at oncs or in two portions (each drunk in one go). Eat some fruit immediately after kava (apples or oranges work well).

Tbf, insomnia 12h after consumption and "intense pain" for days after just a small cup of relatively small amount of kava is likely either due to completely unrelated factors (eg some illness, infection, other supplement, food etc), or points to some extreme unique intolerance. Even if kava was of low quality (which isnt the case), such small amount shouldnt cause any such issues. Hopefully this was just a one off coincidence and that you dont have any intolerance

Specifically, I woke up 10 hours after taking the kava (and 5 hours after going to bed) and couldn't get back to sleep, which never happens to me. And the stomach pains started about 2 hours after taking the kava (it was about 9 p.m.) and lasted until the next day after noon, fading as I went along. I hadn't taken any supplements and wasn't sick, so all has been well since. My wife ate the same dish as me and felt no pain. I ate the same dish myself the next day, with no aggravation or pain. I don't think I'm intolerant to kava, as I've already used about ten cultivars (from 4 or 5 different suppliers) over the last 5 years. Just to clarify.

I'm someone who's very receptive to kava (or other things in general), 15 grams usually gives me a smooth and satisfying effect, I've never exceeded 25 grams in a single session.

The problem may come from the strainer bag, as I still had a practically new KWK strainer, so I didn't buy any with my order, but if I'd known I would have! I'd said to myself when filtering that the kava that the part in the bag seemed small than usual. So I let it rest longer, then drank it, leaving the “sediment” at the bottom to be thrown away afterwards. I usually eat dried fruit after drinking kava (cashew nuts).

As shipping costs are quite high for any order (DPD), I'm not sure I'll be able to place another order just for a new bag, while hoping that it will remove the side effects...
