Kavasutra kava bar NY

BurningFish

Kava Curious
I'm travelling to New York for a few days on the 6th of September from England, where kava bars don't exist.
I would like to visit Kavasutra whilst I'm there. Coming from where 18 is the age restriction limit, and not quite being 21 yet, will this be a problem?
Also, any recommendations on what to try on the menu? This won't be my first time with kava so which drinks do you think I should try out?

You are good at 18, technically Kavasutra doesn't have to impose an age limit but the owner does it to be on the safe side. As for a recommendation, I am embarrassed to say I live 40 minutes away and have yet to set foot inside.

Having just looked at the menu online, it looks like you're in for a treat! I would try both of the traditional Kavas and then try one of those Daquiris. Be prepared though, because Kava bars are notoriously expensive.

Except for BKH. I think I spent 4$ a shell and had maybe 2-3. They make em stout...

True story. BKH is by far the best Nakamal I've been to. They know their stuff and make it right. The quality of the Kava and proper preparation is what keeps them in business, so they can keep the prices reasonable.

Bula, @Bula Kava House !
I agree. I enjoyed my weekend there immensely. Wife and I had some solomons and tried to do a Star Wars puzzle. But it was missing pieces. Then we trudged off to find some Thai food.

I imagine the NY kava bar is in close proximity to amazing snacks as well. Man I love snacks...

Let us know how it goes @BurningFish ! Enjoy your stay.

If you want the whole two day hangover experience you can try the "Archie" Solomons kava...
"Considered “Top Shelf” kava that is strong, smooth, and longer lasting then any other..."
That's typical dog-whistle language for tudei. I'm not saying they shouldn't serve it to people who have never used kava before. But I do have a problem with them not saying what it actually is in plain language...

Thanks for the help guys. So do you think I should avoid the boosted potency drinks on the menu because they could be tudei?

I would like to try one of the cocktails with kava extract in; am I right in thinking the extract should be safe as it is sold in a bar? I know that extracts aren't usually a good idea so I'm not fussed if you guys say it's not wise to try it.

Edit: I will definitely write up a review soon after going. I'll probably post it when I get back to England.

Hopefully it won't be a fortune! I'm bringing a good friend with me as he's only tried it once before and wants to try it again.

It feels strange that it was roughly 2 years ago that I could be served alcohol at home, but I'll be refused whilst in America. Kavasutra will hopefully be a great alternative during my stay.

No, no. I think you're fine whichever way you go. Don't worry about Tudei too much. Chances are that the Kava probably isn't Tudei anyway. It's been mostly zapped from the system.

I'm glad to hear that there's much less tudei recently. I'm really looking forward to visiting.

If only US kava bars charged 1vt per mL. Kava i sas tumas!
1 Vanuatu Vatu = 0.0091 US Dollars, or about one US cent.
1 dollar per shell (120 mL)
9 dollars for a liter of kava.
That would be nice. lol. Is that really the price in Vanuatu?

Hey, I'm 19 and go to the kavasutra in Denver. They do indeed sell K@... but it's not on the menu. The shots and frozen drinks didn't do anything for me, but they're good to chase down the traditional drinks. Neither of the two kavas they sell made me sick or lasted longer than a couple of hours, I'm certain they aren't tudei. The berry bowls are tasty too! Met some really cool people there.

I've just been to Kavasutra. It was a great experience all round in my opinion. I'll post a full review when I'm less Kava'd, haha.

Be cautious with the redbull and kava cocktail. I recently took energy pills and drank kava, and I didn't have a good experience. Redbull has about the same stuff in it.

Yes that's pretty much it. A standard shell has been 50 vatu (US45 cents) for about 25 years now in Vila - nobody wants to increase it for fear of societal collapse. You can also buy any multiple of 50vatu so many people start with at least 100vt for the first few then taper back to 50vt shells.
In some kava bars the measures have got smaller over the years but are still at least 120ml I reckon. As the measures have got smaller more people drink 100vt shells now but still cheap. Drink enough and the savings pay for your airfare!
