Hi everyone, I know how you all like pictures of my kava so I thought I would post this picture of a very large 'Awa Hiwa, I heard it said on time on the forums several months ago, after a visit from Hawaii that Hawaiian 'Awa does not get very big and in fact is very small. Well I am here to prove with pictures that Hawaiian kava does get big, very big. As long as you know what the kava wants in order to grow large then it is easy to grow kava this big. Enjoy the picture, I will post more later.

Thanks for looking and aloha.

Is that a fallen tree to the left of the kava plant or just an exposed part of its root system?

Heh, heh, I hear ya' Kapm. You are hoping all that is root are lateral roots that couldn't wait to make it to your shell and popped up out of the ground looking for attention. Maybe a 100 pounds of root just waiting for one of use to show up with a machete. :sneaky:
@Gourmet Hawaiian Kava, is it possible to harvest "a lil' root" and still allow the mother plant to continue growing?

To the left of the Awa, that's certainly not Kava root. It's got to be a fallen tree or the root system of another tree. Kava has a big stump and downward, thinner, webbing roots. If that was Waka it would be from Kava that was 30 feet tall.

How many years does it take for it to be that tall? 10-11 years I would imagine right??

Yes that is just a dead log from a rose apple tree. I wish that was a lateral root.:hungry: The largest lateral root I have ever seen was about 3.5 inches in diameter. This kava plant is about 15-20 feet tall.
@Deleted User01 if you find a lateral root far enough away from the stump and cut that one then the plant will still be fine, the closer it gets to the stump then you start to run the risk of introducing pest and disease to the kava plant.
Aloha.

I prefer to use my Damascus sword over a machete, or my D2 tool steel sword is good too. Dam, where is that Ninja smiley face? Oh well I will just use this one. :nailbiting:;) Just for your info Deleted User01, when I am harvesting kava there is sometimes some centipedes and I use my shurikens for them otherwise known as throwing stars. (y) Sometimes I will use a Kunai for the real big ones, otherwise knows as a throwing knife or spike.
Aloha.

Fantastic photos.....you should do a 2017 calendar
Just brainstorming here but it would be cool to have a Kava Forums calendar with a different vendor each month and a one time use coupon code to go with it. All proceeds could go to a charity or something like that. Like a fundraising calendar or a kava awareness calendar. You could have different pictures and fun kava facts.
