Legal Status of Kava in Australia

So last night I finally got to watch the tv series 'border protection' with the elusive $1000/kg Kava story.

Customs caught a chap at a remote airport with 10kg of kava & went on to claim its 'street value' is $20 for 20 grams. The fools even went on to say its sold in 20 gram bags.

What a complete & utter joke. It just made fools of the customs officers stating these ridiculous figure. $80/kg is standard price in Aust.

Any kava drinker knows this.

Looks like it is in small bags actually. You'd have to be crazy to actually buy one of these though. I suppose you could tosh and wash 20-25g, but who's going to pay $20 for that?!

You can buy Tongan kava here for $60/kg actually, it's everywhere. $940 a kilo cheaper than what Aussie customs & border protection sell it for.

Uk sellers on eBay regularly try and sell it for that price what's the point of a 20 -25g and 50g bags I'll see if I can find any and post for entertainment purposes only

Yeah there's a lot of crap like that out there in the US too. Basically taking advantage of people who are unfamiliar with kava which is a shame, I wonder how many people write it off after the pills or whatever don't do anything other than give you gross peppery burps.

I noticed that there is a kava bar in Adelaide called Kava Hut. I wonder how that fits into the law, and how they bring in enough kava to run a business. Maybe they have an exception?

I'm not sure if they are still open, I am not in Adelaide, but I saw a review here http://www.weekendnotes.com/kava-hut-bar/ and the review is only a year old. I am in Canada now so I can get legal kava, but I will be back living in Australia later this year, and am very interested to find some legal ways to enjoy kava, beyond the 2kg in your luggage rule.
