I think I already have it here in the Kavapedia for you Chris.
Hi HeadHodge, you got it, that was what I was going to get but I did not have time to look for it, I am glad you found it now the other members can see it and benefit from it. Skip is a great guy and has helped the kava industry in a big way and he is still helping.
Now I know why your the Head, Hodge. (y)
Aloha.

A friend of mine and a member of the Hawaii Aw Council is Dr. Skip Bittenbender. He did a study on how much kavalactones were extracted using different prep methods, I will find that article, i have it around somewhere and then I will post it here.
Here is the article Chris was talking about: https://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&...&sig=AHIEtbQImXzVsnE9AiwYA06pF_qzzjm3zA&pli=1

I think Ed told me he found a new favorite blender. It was something of an infomercial called the "ninja" or something? He was pretty pumped at how good it worked!
If Ed Johnston is excited about a blender I'm really going to need to know which blender it is. I can't argue with the OGs of Kava.

This looks like it might work pretty well and it's on the low end of their line, $90

It touts being able to make an ultra smooth drink without leaving the fibers that other blenders leave behind. I'm already thinking about how micronized/instant would do in this machine as well as giving root powder a good agitation before straining. This one, however, is geared more towards personal size drinks, like 24oz so wouldn't be practical for large volume prep. I wonder which one he recommends though...

Edit: ok this one looks great and you get a lot of stuff with it, like chopping blades to help cut down actual roots and what not: http://www.ninjakitchen.com/product...le&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=CPCSearchBrand

Yes, if you freeze your dry powder it will rupture the cell walls thus releasing more kavalactones. (y)
Aloha.

This is awesome information, thanks Chris! I'll try this with 2nd wash root that I save for later. Usually, I'll bag up used root from the first wash to save for later. I'll collect a bunch of used root then make some more kava. Now, I'll save some then throw it in the freezer so it will have moisture going in. I'll also throw a bag of "dry" root powder in the freezer to prep later. It's worth trying even though the results will probably be subjective at best but it can't hurt!

Wow I like this. But I cant find the bowel for under $300, much less getting fresh root. How dose some one go about getting the fresh root? Other than going to the place of harvest. I mean, I can order frozen steaks, why not frozen kava roots? Really Chris, great job @Gourmet Hawaiian Kava , This is a awesome right up. I would love to take this to a more traditional level. My method is so modern, I use a blender. Much love Roaddog....

You can buy fresh frozen root from KanakaKava.com and PinnerCreekOrganics.com ...it's expensive and you get much less use out of it per pound. But it's the only way you can try what real, fresh, undried kava is like from our boring non-pacific island homes. ;)

Ya, not cheap, but may at some point be worth trying. I would also love to own a traditional bowel, too. They look so beautiful, but not cheap. Much love. Roaddog....

The Ninja is an awesome package for the money! Didn't even think about it for Kava. My bro has it and it totally destroys everything. I would say its second only to the Vitamix blending system. The Ninja is like half the cost and comes with some cool attachments though. Not quite as awesome as Vitamix but it's strong enough to make peanut butter and stuff. The Vitamix is like $399 or something insane. I've bought cars for less...

I'm still new to kava (some Yogi tea, Kalm with Kava, one batch of dry root) and have yet to "break through," so to speak. However, my first time whipping up a batch of dry kava, I used my Ninja and it blended ultra smooth. I used 2 tbsp of kava, 1 cup of water and 1/2 cup of 2% milk (very weak batch). The kava was a very powdery variety. A few pulses with my Ninja and the mixture blended perfectly with a nice foamy froth on the top. It was my first time drinking dry root kava and it was as smoother than the coffee I drink each morning -- very nice!

I can't speak to how blending in a Ninja effects kavalactone-release or potency, but the smoothness of the drink was awesome. Not sure how it would work with a more coarse kava variety, but the fine powdery stuff works great. I got some Melo Melo on order right now, so I'll try it out the Ninja on that stuff. I'm also excited to try the "old fashioned" method of extraction, too. After all, I need to pay my dues the Kava Gods being a newbie and all!
