A volcano in Vanuatu is belching ash and threatening to erupt more violently. The island of Ambae is one big shield volcano with a caldera on the very top. Residents mainly live along the coasts. Ashfall damages gardens and drinking water, and there's a risk of pyroclastic flows and lahars.

Areas within 10 km of Manaro are being evacuated to the east and west ends of Ambae for now. If the volcano goes into a major eruption mode, the government has a backup plan to try to evacuate the whole island. For now, displaced families are sleeping in schools and churches on the east and west ends of Ambae. Fresh water and food are limited.

Yumi Toktok Stret reports that the ships Tina and Brisk are helping ferry aid to Ambae and evacuate man Ambae to safety. Even the Big Sista, which usually sails in southern Vanuatu, has also gone to Ambae to help.

We're lucky this is happening in September, and not during the Southern Hemisphere cyclone season.

Hurricanes, Earthquakes, Volcanoes, and the NFL. I hope nobody gets hurt out there. I'm sick and tired of seeing peoples lives destroyed with a flick of the wrist.

You've heard of an elf on a shelf...

But seriously I've been following this, and thankfully it seems the government has been doing a pretty good job of evacuating people; hopefully everyone stays safe there.

I have been reading more about this volcanic island and I read that the last significant activity with the volcano was in 2005 where people were evacuated and lived away from their villages for 3 months. It was not clear to me however if the volcano had erupted completely with lava flows at that time. From what I could gather it seemed like it was ash only and it looks like this eruption may be much worse with actual lava flows.

What will happen to the people of the island? According to an article I read about the island it said that the people depended completely on rain water for all of their water needs and do subsistence farming for their own food as well as some cash crops. If the volcano erupts completely what will happen to their homes, water, gardens, cash crops? What will become of the people there and their way of life? Lord have mercy!

The Royal New Zealand Air Force has surveyed the Ambae volcano (and other volcanoes in the area):

(It would probably be totally inappropriate here to remark upon the fact that the logo of the Royal NZ Air Force consists of a flightless bird...)

Now it appears they are going to evacuate everyone from the island.

Better safe than sorry, I suppose. Plus, getting water and food to the displaced people will be simpler once they're on neighboring islands.

I just listened to Buzz 96 FM reporting that some public land on Pentecost will be used to receive evacuees. Livestock is going to Maewo. They're even planning for students to be able to sit their end-of-year exams while evacuated.

Being a refugee on Pentecost... at least they've got kava.

Video from Wednesday, 27 September.

They're standing on the east rim of Manaro Lakua (the lake that changed color), looking west towards the growing cone in Manaro Vui about 1 km away.

Thanks for the link, Bubba.

It's kinda funny how some sources still refer to Ambae as Aoba. As legend has it, one of the first European expeditions to Vanuatu got that name by mistake by pointing towards the island and asking "what's what?" The locals thought they were pointing at a bird... an aoba.

Tanna is similar. People landed on the island and pointed the ground... "what is this?" they asked. "Earth." was the obvious reply.

The rest of islands in Vanuatu don't really have funny name origins. Gaua used to be called Santa Maria... In local language, Aneityum is Keamu, and Erromango is Nelcompne.

There's an urban legend that Malekula came from pain-in-the-ass... not sure how true that may be.
