What is the meaning behind the Hawaiian strain names, if any? I know SIG, but I'm wondering if there's any kind of translation for names like moi and mahakea etc. Pardon me if this is a dumb question.
Papa 'Ele 'ele = Short/Dark - Black
Papa Kea= Short/White (really green)
Papa 'Ele 'ele Pu'u pu'u = Short/Black/Spotted
Hanakapi'ai is a place name of the Valley it was found in
Honokane 'Iki is also a place name;
Mo'i is Ali'i or Royalty-King-Monarch because it was reserved for Ali'i until things changed and plenty was grown
Mapulehu is a place name on Island of Moloka'i
Hiwa = entirely black
Mahakea actually is usually called Makea and is just that- 'a cultivar of 'awa "
Opihikao is a place name
SIG (sure is good) was actually Panaewa because lots was planted in that area of Hawai'i, so that's a place name also

Kumakua means stands in the mountains and indicates it can be grown there. Also- a low spreading bush
