The flavor is kind of bitter with a slight spice to it, it is not exceptionally numbing in the mouth or throat but was enough to provide relief from a pesky canker sore. It has a beautiful dark color to it once it is prepared. Consumed in 4 shells over an hour, it starts off with a noticeable mental relaxation even after a very long and stressful day my anxiety is normally rather intense but this seems to calm it to a very manageable level. The effect then continues into a nice physical relaxation and my sore back slowly loosens and becomes quite comfortable. The effect lasts a good while. I love this kava as a daily driver.
