New Kava Bar Opening

Kalm with Kava

Kava Vendor
Be ready to rejoice and indulge those who live in the Bay Area. The first Kava Bar in San Francisco is opening soon (Jan 23rd I believe ) Melomelo Kava Bar and they will be offering Kalm with Kava Concentrate for sale!

They have prior experience with the Kava Bar scene in Florida, will not be serving any alcohol or coffee, and are focusing on offering only Noble kava varieties. I think these guys are going to do well. [emoji2]

From what I can see, these guys will be serving VKS stuff? It seems that VKS is really good to its large customers (GKE, the new bar, etc), but not so great when it comes to small buyers. I only ordered from them once. I bought Malekula "Magic" and it tasted and smelled like a fresh-cut pine tree. From what I've been told this isn't the usual taste or smell of MM, so I gather I got some tudei magic instead... :( I was a bit disappointed, especially as everybody seems to like GKE's VKS products!
Also, I visited their shop (The Kava Emporium) in Port Vila and noticed that they sell K@ and I overheard one guy recommending it as a good thing to add to kava (I am not sure if he was their employee or just a random K@ enthusiast wearing a kava t-shirt).

Good researching @Henry. Yes from what I understand the majority of their initial kava offerings will be VKS but it sounds like they will be bringing on others as well.

It's a shame to see k***** making its way to the Vanuatu kava scene. I think that's the last thing we all want to see being associated with kava. :-(

I guess I'm dumb on this one, but I keep seeing this "K*****" word used around here; what is it referring to?

Starts with K, followed by R, then by A, then by T, then by O and it finishes with a big fat M. I personaly have never tried it, but it is reportedly highly addictive and according to a few people here there are some scumbag kava bars that add this stuff to their kava to get their customers addicted (but this can all be just some kind of urban legend).

Anyway, I didn't want to hijack this thread with negative vibes. @Kalm with Kava this bar looks great and the owners seem to know quite a lot about kava. If you do happen to know them personally, try to convince them to come and join us here!

@Henry, let's give them a chance. Perhaps Kalm with Kava can hit them over the head with the Noble Kava theme and straighten them out. If that doesn't work, then Nemo can go commando on them when he gets there. If nothing else, I hope they label their kava as being Noble or Blended. We have to face the facts that consumers initial reaction is to buy the strongest stuff they can get. Just look at BHK where Koniak is King. Human nature.

One of the things I love about this forum is how we get to see vendors go from the ground floor to the public eye. Congrats @Kalm with Kava, it's awesome to see products resold by other vendors. Also I have good feelings about the way these new kava bars are selecting products to feature from our beloved vendors here.

Apparently it's not a legend in Florida . Just read this :
"Michael then explained that his wife sat at the kava bar, looked up on the drink board, and ordered the first thing on the menu: the komodo.

"She looked at a drink board that lists a variety of different drinks not knowing what was in them," Michael stresses. "The ingredients are not being listed; they are not being disclosed. So my wife ordered a komodo... At the time, we didn't know there was any K@ in it or what K@ even was."

yep. :( Other places have reportedly been spiking their kava drinks not only with K@, but also with booze.

Some of the yelp reviews for the Wowee Maui kava bar pretty much reflect how people mix a shell or two along with a drink from the 'conventional bar selection' . If the bartenders there don't see an issue mixing both substances then why should we expect anyone else to?

Someone sneaks alcohol into my kava without informing me then they better be good on their feet. People can have some quite sever reactions to alcohol.

Well thanks @Kalm with Kava for the mention, we're flattered!

As for a lot of the comments here, we're as shocked as you are! Firstly, we don't have any Kava from VKS (as of yet, who knows what the future holds) and whereas we certainly will be serving Noble varietals (we're named after one!) we won't exclude other offerings entirely. If you love your Tudei, and can't see the light of reason, who am I to tell you otherwise? ('Murica!) But you can rest assured, we plan on being the poster boy for self-regulation, and not only label "Noble" but lateral:stump ratios as well. What we currently have is from Pentecost, 100% noble, and in the market for other suppliers. We certainly will have Melo Melo, but until I can ascertain beyond a shadow of a doubt that it's not a blend by chemotyping, I'll hold off on serving it as such. We're also very keen on going to the islands ourselves to meet the farmers and see where our Kava comes from! One of us holds a bio deg with a focus on biochem (always enjoy @infraredz posts!) so you can be sure we're taking the kava - and its chemistry - seriously.

Now, to address this shenanegins of slipping alcohol and Kr**** into our shells: we're as outraged as you are anyone would do that! We've put a label on our menu specifically asking patrons NOT to mix our kava with alcohol. As for the Kr****: we don't plan on ever mixing it with Kava. Although there is an herb store here that sells it and numerous people have been asking us if we will brew it, it is not something we're keen on: we sell kava, steeped and hand-squeezed, with lots of love. We're happy to be possibly one of the only kava bars to have Green Kava. And I'll be damned if we get lumped in with any other place for trying to sneak alcohol or Kr**** in their shells. We take pride in what we serve and how we serve it. I appreciate your concern @Henry, but that's not what we're about.

On a lighter note, I've been a long time lurker on this site, and know the forums well (back when it was still in the infancy stages before all this fancy make-up!) and should you ever find yourself in the East Bay, please stop in and mention KavaForums, and a shell or two will be on the house. Who knows, we might even crack out the Tanoa and try to see the bottom!

BULA!
