Hi Chris - (and everyone else reading this).

I've been using this forum as a research tool and have learned quite a bit in a short amount of time due to the intelligent information shared by the forum members. You all appear very research driven and I applaud you for that.

I would like to make my first purchase with GHK and have been attempting to contact Chris now for several days with the hope of having his guidance in placing the order. I have sent several emails to both the GHK profile email listed on this forum website and to the gourmethawaiiankava email on the GHK website yet have not received a response to date. Chris, is there a better email with which to contact you? Please advise. Many thanks...

That's actually really strange, he's usually "Johnny On the Spot" with e-mails. I'm sure he'll see your post here, and respond.

Welcome to the forum @Rookietwoshoes. Chris (@Gourmet Hawaiian Kava ) has been out of pocket as of late and he might be on vacation. I know, I know, everyday is a vacation day with Kava but he does run 2 businesses and needs a break now and then. I did notice that his web site is open for orders. Give us your questions and I'll be we can guide you. If not, check out his sampler packs and take a tour of Hawaiian Kavas.

Thanks very much for offering to help. I tried kava for the first time at a kava bar in Florida. They serve a brand called Wakaya Perfection. I did some research and it is kava grown on a private island by the man who owns the Fiji water brand - a man by the name of Gilmore. He also grows high quality organic ginger which I find interesting given that a post was recently written on this forum by a vendor regarding a new batch of kava that is allegedly tainted with a ginger odor. Perhaps it is kava from the same manufacturer.

Back to my point - I had 3-4 shells and didn't much feel like socializing at all. I'm looking for kava that is happy, cerebral, creative and social. Heady is fine as long as it doesn't end up as too edgy or getting lost in an endless tunnel of thought.

It seems as though the forum members agree that Mo'i, Papa Ele, Mahakea and Honokane have heady /energizing attributes....wondering which one of those might best fit the bill. I'd consider buying the sampler pack, however, it contains Nene which supposedly tends to be more on the sedating side.

I realize that kava effects are fairly subjective. Yet if 'there's a kava for every occasion' then which one might you think best encompasses the attributes listed above?

Thanks in advance for any response.
Much appreciated.

Ok, the Samplers have Moi, Nene, and Mahakea. Moi is heady and a favorite of some here. It is also very popular in Hawaii. Mahakea is more balanced. Both heady and sedating and it appears to be a big favorite here on the forum. That is my current day time favorite. Nene is somewhat sedating but not overwhelming. I use it for a night cap and I love the sleep it bestows upon my weary body. It is light in color and taste is the most noble of Kavas tested by Deleted User. The Islanders used it to treat their children in the good ole days. I had the Honokane Iki back when and it is really, really heady. My big Kava joke is that everyone around me can hear my ears ring. That is going to be my next purchase.

Try the sampler because Kava is not a one pony show. You use different kavas for different occasions and the sampler will give you that. I'm a big fan of Micronized but my GI is very forgiving. You can also strain it. The Micronized is very pure because the Makas have been removed and I believe it gives me more bang for the buck. But that's my own opinion. The newer Micronized sold by GHK is even finer then before, almost like instant. And in fact GHK has been putting more lateral roots in the last batch of instant so these newer products promise to be more potent and better than the previous versions. Whew!!! Now you know everything that I know. :D

That's what I had at the kava bar and didn't care for. Glad I was able to connect the dots after the 'whats that smell thread' and not invest in that strain again during their recent cyber sale .

Then you're probably looking for a lighter, more kavain heavy strain. I'll echo Deleted User01 in his suggestion for Hawaiian Kavas. They, almost as a rule, tend to be lighter, and more uplifting than those found in Fiji or Vanuatu which are characteristically heavier and more sedating.

To put a finer point of Kapm observations, it's the difference between a daytime kava and a nighttime kava. But it is good to have both so the samplers are a good starting point.

Is there much of a difference between papa ele and honokane ?

Lordy, lordy, lordy, you really expect a bunch of Kava Heads to remember a Kava from 4 months ago? :banghead: Off the top of my head, I will say the Honokane Iki is headier than the Papa Ele Ele but they are both heady kavas. Sometimes a Kava that is too heady will be distracting but it's a matter of taste. You gotta remember that these Kavas come and go as Chris harvests them but I distinctly remember the Honokane Iki making my "bells ring". It is also a darker kava and the darker ones seem to be more potent but less tasty. That being said, I don't think any of the GHK kavas will disappoint. It's just a matter of what kind of Kava you prefer for the Occasion. I guess it's time for GHK to come out with a 5 kava Hawaiian sampler. Then you would be loaded for Bear or even Yeti. :D (Yeti being your mother in law).

So the vacation turned out to be the "flu vacation". I just got an email from him and he hopes to get out of bed today and he apologizes to everyone for not being to answer our questions. FYI, the authorities are saying that the current strain of flu is potent (like my kava) and the flu shot is not doing a good job with it. They do recommend Theraflu and of course drink plenty of liquids yada, yada, yada ....
