Kava Who?
You @Roaddog, @Deleted User has his experiment going on, but I remember "somewhere" that the reason you shouldn't cook kava above a certain temperature is that it "boils" off the kavatones. Since you have the no how, I think it would be a totally awesome experiment if you could boil off the kavatones into a steam water/kavatone mixture and reclaim it with your "water" distiller. I'm not joking here, I would be willing to donate as much kava as needed for that kind of experiment.
(p.s. say hi to Mrs.Skunk for me :) )
Ok, here is how distillation of say alcohol works. Alcohol, being lighter than water, has a lower evaporation temperature point. For instance, this is an intricate part of distilling. Let me start by saying, I double distill everything. The first run will produce a less refined alcohol, It comes out at about 140 proof, and has a bit of a yellow hew, about it. Its often referred by the Appalachian folk, as good old Mountain Dew. Its also where the company Mtn. Dew got there name from. Back in those days they used it as a sales pitch.

Anyway these distinct cuts on the second run helps to get rid of any harmful heavy metals (Like Nickel will cause blindness) Mercury is not good, neither is lead. Now these temperature cuts , knowing that water has a boiling point, of 210F, occur at a lower temperature. Alcohol starts to evaporate at 173F so the still will heat the mash, to a point that at first it will produce straight alcohol. So At the beginning of a run, and at the end, are called Heads and Tails. So I keep in a separate collection vessel, the beginning of a run, from 173 to about 180, as the heads. The heads are not used, because that is the temperature range, where Heavy metals, are extruded from the mash. I run from 180 to 205 as quality alcohol, that could be used to run your lawn mower. from 205 to 210, I collect as tails. The tails often are weaker, its the temperature point where water, also begins to evaporate. I then take the heads, and the tail, and blend them together, to be used, on the next run. So you never actually loose any.

Ok, Now why did I get to all that worthless info? Well because it describes what occurs, and the mechanism of its function. Heat heats up the mash to the point of 173, it then forces the alcohol to be evaporated first. After all alcohol is evaporated, the temperature will reach 210, the boiling point of water, resulting in distilled water, after that. , I see no way kava, could in anyway by distillation, Be extracted. More over the what would happen, is the water of a grog, would simply reach the boiling point of water, and Distilled water would come from the condenser, resulting in the kava being left, overheated, in the boiler part of the still. So I guess I would have to say, I don't think that will work. Sorry, Much love. Roaddog....

Well Crap. :)
But I still wish someone would try it instead of theorizing about it. You just never know in the wild wild west.
I guess it's just simply not in my genes to say NO to anything.
I think @Noueky would call that Mamby Bamby

Now hypothetically speaking, If one was to make a mash from kava. Meaning take kava, and sugars, mix with water and yeasts. Then allow microbial auction to happen, ( bacteria eats sugar and shits alcohol. Yes when you drink alcohol, you are drinking bacteria shit)which would result in a kava beer, containing Alcohol. Then that Beer could be distilled, separating the alcohol from the Kava beer. This would result in some transfer of kava into the alcohol.

Now if any Kavaloids would be infused into the resulting Alcohol? I don't know. But I highly doubt it. slight differences do occur, from the different grains, and things used to make mash. For example potatoes, make Vodka, Rice makes Gin, Wheat makes Irish whiskey. Corn makes bourbon whiskey. Agave Makes Tequila. So what would kava make? Probably a nasty tasting alcohol, without any kavaloids. Worse over you could create a very dangerous form of alcohol called methanol, or Methyl Alcohol. Which is made from alcohol made from wood. Which technically speaking ground up kava root, would be similar to wood. With that being said. I don't even think taking that wrought would give desired results. Much love. Roaddog....

@Roaddog, actually I was thinking of something much simpler. I just can't get anyone to try it. I think it would safe enough. But would it be effective? That's the part I don't know.

Ok your trying to achieve subcritical water? Well distillation, dose not allow the water to get hotter than 210F. there are many applications for this besides alcohol. Such as making Vinegar, and many solvents. Also you had posted this link, as being able to possibly extract, http://www.ehow.com/how_7693451_build-cooker-distiller-essential-oils.html . I'm not sure this application would work with kava. Also distilling is so much more complicated, than placing a rubber tube over the outlet of a pressure cooker. But I have pressure cookers too. Living on a farm, I have also learned the art of canning. I can, can eggs, meats, vegetables. I would be more than happy to conduct any experiments you would like. But I'm not sure How one would even proceed, or what the desired results are. I assume more potent kava? The only thing I can come up with, would be to fill a jar with kava grog, and pressure cook it. That would allow the grog to achieve temperatures of 250F, and that would be pushing it. I would have to run 18 to 20 PSI to get those temperatures, which is running a pressure cooker, at its pop temperature. The temperature where the PC gets so hot, and so filled with pressure, it pops its rubber safety feature, and expels all the pressure. Not something you want to be around, when it happens. Anyway, here is an image of my pressure cookers. They were shiny and new back then when I took this picture. Also @Noueky Sorry if we have gotten a bit off topic here. Much love, Roaddog....

@Roaddog. You know this stuff way better than I do. But simply put, I was thinking that you mix some water with some kava powder, boil it in the pressure and collect the steam (hopefully with the boiled off kavatones) and then drink the boiled off water (via the steam). If you read more of the posts in that thread you will see I'm talking about sub-critical temperatures (not super critical) Someone else asked me the exact same question.

I eagerly await for some hope from my friend frankenskunk.

Ok, @HeadHodge ,according to this article http://jonbarron.org/article/distilled-water#.U_PInfldWuo there are many substances that will come through during water distillation. I mean that's what I presume you mean, water distillation. Well according to this article, distilling water does not remove certain chemicals. In some cases it can intensify the concentration, of such chemicals. The real question is , Do kavatones , meet the requirements necessary, to pass through the distillation process? Also realize this, most chemicals will not. For instance I can take salt water, and convert it to distilled water, and the salt will be gone. I guess it matter what the specific Kavatones evaporation temperature, and its ability to be distilled. Also to add insult to injury. Often the distillation process changes the molecular structure of a substances. For instance chlorine, gets changed to chloroform, through the process of distillation. So then, we are not only posing the question dose the distillation process offer an active absorber for kavatones? Then the next question is what will its molecular structure be, after coming through the distilling process? I mean Im up for trying anything. But I must be able to rap my brain around it. What you ask is not easy, otherwise it would be common practice. I have another small still I built, its a little more modern, and has a column. This is not a reflux still, but simply a column pot still. Here is a picture of it.

@Noueky , yes I am a farmer know. I have tried my hand at a few things. Running a Still was done in my childhood. It was my job to watch the collection vessel, so it didn't overflow. Also played with it a little, years ago in the Kentucky hills. But I find growing healthy things, are what makes me happy. Although it can be hard work. Much love. Roaddog...

@Roaddog, well I would really like to see you try something along those lines. But if you feel it's even remotely unsafe then definitely don't do it. I was just thinking it would be easy to boil some kava, sniff the steam and see if there were any effects from the boil off. That's a reason I also posted a while back in a thread about vaping. I was thinking more along the lines of maybe creating something that is like a vaporizer. And with the link I gave you they took it one step further by capturing the steam and letting it condense back to a liquid.

@HeadHodge , No I don't necessarily feel its unsafe. But I also make my own black powder, using a homemade mill. And fire off my own cannon. But we will get into that on another day. Well give me time to wrap my brain around it, and I may be able to do something. Im not worried about what you requested being dangerous, more Im worried it will produce no results. But I could be wrong. Also really need @Deleted User , in on this one. He may have some input, his little lab impressed me, and that dose not happen often. Much love. Roaddog....

I have a feeling it would be some fun sharing some shells with you and wifey. It's been many years since I've been to Texas but I would definitely look you guys up if I have reason to be there again. If I could get @shakas to buy me a smart phone, I would bring him along with me. :)

Nope I'm not from Taxes. Your thinking of @Monkava'd , or @kavadude . I'm from Southern Illinois, not far from St. Louis. Although that's a ways from San Diego. But ya, if you can get @shakas on the smart phone you can bring him along. shakas could be like the Yard Nome. Where you take him everywhere, and get a picture with him. shakes Last seen in Vanuata. Also thank you for the compliment. Some folks call me a bit eccentric. I have bicycles with motors on them, 1200 watt solar panels, attached to my travel trailer, but plugged into my grid. So if ya like weird interesting inventions, and stuff like that, then yes, I would be a blast. Also, I might add I'm all tattooed up with a Willy Nelson braid. Maybe someday Ill post a picture, but not today. Much love. Roaddog....

Worldwide kava get together perhaps?:woot:
Maybe a meet up at Mauna Kea for an honorary toast of Opihikao, and a tanoa to initiate a ceremony. :wideyed:
We should fund a hawaii meet up with kava and prepare fresh root during out journey up the mountain.
Okay I know it's just a dream and if I ever make it to the Hawaiian islands I'll make sure to bring a picture of shakas face so he can come too.
