I'd wager that kava means some kind of coffee or tea in Pakistan...but it would be great if they were indeed drinking piper methysticum.

Hmm I wonder if that's the miscommunication.

I assume he described it to him though .. coffee seems to be to common to be like "yeah we drink that here too"

What is the stance on kava use in Islam? It is mind altering, but It doesn't make people delusional or psychotic like alchohol does.

Interesting question! Not sure I've ever seen this addressed. I know a few muslims who drink or who have drunk alcohol before (I don't supposed they are meant to) so I'm sure it's not going to be outside of their realm. Indeed, there's no fermentation taking place, so alcohol laws (within Islam) shouldn't apply.
I do wonder, within the context, if there hasn't been some miscommunication in the etymology of the word and as others point out above, it could mean some coffee or type of tea?

A lot of moslem Fijian Indians drink kava. I don't think it's banned in the Koran but its probably up to interpretation depending on how strict the branch is. ISIS would probably frown upon it.
I never got the idea of why SDA folk don't eat lobster. Where did that come from?

In NZ a Muslim group advises local muslims through facebook and other social media that kava is "haram" (or whatever the term for "prohibited" was, I cannot remember). I've contacted them and asked about their rationale. Apparently one Muslim scholar declared it as such several years ago on the basis of what he could find in some encyclopedia that claimed that kava was intoxicating the mind and making people lose control over their mind and body. I argued this wasn't accurate, but they were not interested in any further discussions. I also know that the United Arab Emirates have recently banned kava.

This make sense. Every time I drink kava, I flail around like those used car dealer balloon people, and my only instinct is to KILL. One time while rooted, I hallucinated that a pillow was a crowbar, so I proceeded to smack a 6 month old baby with it.

The baby just laughed, and I realized that the crowbar was actually just a pillow. Then the cops came, confiscated my kava, threw me into a padded cell, and waited for me to sober up. Who knows what could have happened if I actually did have a crowbar.

I know I smoked a lot of opium with Iranian Muslims. I've also had a lot of beer with Muslims. And smoked pot with southern Baptists.

The initial post reminds me of a drunken conversation I had with someone regarding kava. The whole time, she was talking about Cava, Spanish sparkling wine, and I was talking about Kava. Sans sparkles. The single malt made me realize that far later than I should have!

I went to Morocco with a friend as he has a house there. He took me to a hotel where if you go upstairs the westerners sit and drink beer at one price but if you go round the back and down some stairs the muslims are all there drinking the same beer at half the price :)

Stereotypes are a bitch.

Accept for the peurto rican ones. All of those are true. I would know, most of my family is peurto rican.

I spent 6 months cycling in northern Pakistan 20+ years ago and met plenty of mosque-going Moslems who enjoyed smoking the local charas. I bet they would have tried kava if it was offered.

Also spent a night with the Pakistani military border guards camping out at the Pakistan/China border - they were stopping and searching all the Chinese trucks that brought in agricultural machinery which always had a few dozen bottles of high octane spirits hidden in them. They would take a few bottles from each truck and let the Chinese drivers smuggle the rest down to islamabad, then get absolutely hammered each night in their hut. Here' a pic of those very social border guards..
