Kava Side Effects Please help, red eyes!

Alex Exotic

Hello,
I have a problem, I'm 24 and I've been drinking kava for like 4 years now, and lately I had issues with having very red veiny eyes. First it was different; a kava made my eyes hurt and feel pressured from inside, also small pupils, so I stopped that kava (it was Koa Kava and I guess a different thing than what I describe next). Then I used ceremonial cacao, and after using it for a while, my eyes got a bit red/veiny. Now I switched to kava again to remove that effect, and for a while they stayed a bit red but not much, and then suddenly I got very red left eye and a bit red right eye. It doesn't hurt, but feels a bit like it may have some sand in it or something, just a bit. It looks bad tho.

I rely on kava for mental health a lot, so it's scary that it's hurting me, and I'm forced to stop taking it. Also, I can't exactly afford a doctor right now, so..

Does anybody know anything about this?

I noticed yesterday, and this morning is still not yet much better. I only bought some drops for eyes and nothing more yet. Any ideas? Is this kava's effect? What can I do?

I’m not sure about the reddening but I know I feel something gritty under my eyelids when I case of dermo starts coming on. A guess would be that dehydration may play a role. I know that the dermopathy affects the outer surface of the eyelids. Perhaps it can also affect the inside.

As a person who also leans on kava fairly heavily primarily for nerve pain but also for breakthrough anxiety and sleep, I tend to face this problem regularly. The most recent case has been particularly bad.

This always happens to me as well after a while of over indulging and while you can get temporary relief by continuing to use a cold washcloth, the only way is to abstain for a few days but I find that even one day is helpful. You can try a very very thin layer of aquaphor healing ointment but if it gets into your eyes, everything will be blurry. So I find it’s best to use that before bed. Oftentimes you get the sensation that it’s in your eyes but the problem is actually the lids themselves. Good luck and hopefully this helps.
