Powdered Kava Review Pouni Ono

I liked this kava. I bought ½ lb via Amazon, using a gift card that I received at Christmas. When I ordered, I didn't realize that it was out of stock at the Amazon warehouse. It took a couple of days to get back in stock but, as soon as it was, it was shipped quickly.

Opening the bag, there was the usual kava smell...not bad but not great. The grind is a little more coarse than KWK's borogu, with a fair amount of makas shuffling to the top. Taste is probably about like kava usually is. I don't like the taste so I don't usually savor it and instead try to get it down and minimize that part of the experience. Other reviews will have better info about taste.

Preparation varied over the course of the ½ lb. The most common method was soak and kneed with around ¼ to ⅓ cup of kava in 2-3 cups water. Usually it was 1.5 cups kneeded in cold water followed by ½ cup of hot water. Strength seemed to be proportional to the quantity.

It took a few minutes longer than some other kavas to get the sheen in the liquid. Not sure if this is because the percentage of kavalactones is lower, the nature of the kava, or the amount used. I drank 4-8 oz in first serving, followed by 4 oz thereafter. When done, I occasionally found myself wanting something more. I think that this is because I am trying to extend my bags and not using a very large amount of kava to water. Mixing up some instant that I had on hand (GHK Mo'i), usually finished things off.

This is heady but not overly intense. Rather than send me to bed, it sent me to that place where things are good and I'm happy. It's similar to Mo'i but a little lower on the intensity chart. There was some relaxation of the body but minimal overall.

Effects were relatively short-lived, which is not a bad thing if trying to get to that good spot but not get stuck there. This might be something that can be managed by increasing the quantity, but I ran out before getting that far. I've already ordered more because I want to keep this on hand when I want something heady but isn't going to be distracting.
