Kava Curious
Hi, I'm a newbie still working on my RT. Recently I started a bag of RoH Premium Fijian (https://rootofhappinesskava.com/products/premium-fijian-kava-powder-1-2lb-1), double aluballing it. The grog was surprisingly thick and the taste lasted over four washes. I've tried five different kavas by now and none of them was any like this. I suspected that one of my aluballs may be damaged and leaking the powder, so I examined them and did some testing. Balls doesn't seem to be damaged, but shaking the dry aluball with this kava within does release some powder. I searched the forums and learned that aluball's mesh is 80 micron (http://kavaforums.com/forum/posts/125030/) and micronized kava is generally 80 microns as well (http://kavaforums.com/forum/threads/toss-and-wash.6831/page-2#post-112807). Does it mean that the grind is so fine that some of the powder is actually micronized kava and I'm getting it as a bonus potentiating my grog, or micronized kava isn't just very fine kava so I'm basically eating wood and I shouldn't use it with aluball?

Kava powder can fluctuate in size from batch to batch and producer to producer. I wouldn’t necessarily say most Kava is 80 micron.

In your case I would say it’s most likely that you either have a kava with a larger percentage of fine particles than you’re used to —or— a kava that has naturally held on to more of its lactones.

I use a 100 micron strainer for everything and have experimented with smaller and larger micron sizes. You can adjust your strainer for specific Kava grind sizes...but I’ve found 100 to generally be the sweet spot for me with most kavas. Too fine = less potency but ‘cleaner and smoother’ grog, too large = thick, scratchy, potent but more sickening grog.

I think, in a way, all medium grind kava has some percentage of it’s bulk that you could consider ‘micronized’.

Root of happiness do grind their kavas particularly fine. Tyler recommends a 150 micron strainer so that's going to get quite a bit of sediment in it, too much for me. It's worth playing around with different options though, see what works best for you. I would say if you're going to use a larger micron strainer with such a fine kava you really want to lower the amount of kava you use.
