Re-Introduction and Journey Update

Kava Newbie
Hello all. I originally joined this forum back in 2016 when I first discovered kava and immediately fell in love with the abundant amounts of information and wonderfully helpful people here. I credit this forum and kava for helping me get my alcohol consumption under control. I would visit here often, learning as much as I could but, like most of my educational interests, life got in the way and I slowly stopped visiting. Anyway, a friend of mine is in the drink business, THC, CBD, mushroom, electrolyte, etc; and was asking me questions about kava and it got me thinking about this forum so I decided to log back in and give you guys and gals an update on my kava journey and ask a question about suppliers for my friend.

First, the update. Some of you may remember I had a very bad case of RT at the beginning and never got any effect from kava for months when I started. I pushed through (momma ain't raised no quitter), bc I truly believed kava was the right medicine for me to heal my alcohol addiction. When I finally pushed through, the effects weren't what most people report. And still aren't. I get a slight euphoric feeling for about a minute after the first shell or two, then it fades and I chase that feeling for a few hours making shell after shell (20 or so shells) over the course of an evening, then I have to eat a big meal to "set it in" for the next hour, and then I usually fall to sleep. After the meal, the effect can be best described as a slight nicotine like buzz and I tend to withdrawn into myself rather than want to socialize like most people report. At this point, you may be asking why I continue to drink kava. Well, something is better than nothing and any alternative seems to be way worse in the long run. And speaking of long runs, here is the update on my health after almost 10 years of heavy kava usage. It appears that while I don't get the usual effects, I don't get the usual side effects either. The worst side effect I get is itchy skin after a few months of use that goes away after a week of non use. Which I must have "pushed through" that as well bc I haven't had itchy skin in a year or two. I'll be 50 this year and am in much better health than the average American Southerner. I stay at a healthy weight and all my blood work has been great except for my cholesterol being a little high, but it was high before kava. My liver is as healthy as ever too btw, for those curious. And other than having a little "old man skin" (thin skin due to aging), my skin is healthy.

Now on to the questions. First for my friend. Can anyone recommend a good supplier for kavalatones to put in a seltzer? While I'm a traditionalist and prefer to make my own kava for all the same reason you all do as well, I stand by what I said before about the alternatives being much worst. And if a mass produced drink can introduce someone to the benefits of this plant medicine, I count that as a win. Second for me. Has anyone ever tried making a kava "press" or something similar for home use? Something to make larger amounts of kava for storage for when you don't have time to prepare the "dirty sock water" like my girlfriend calls it. Thanks and bula!

Happy Birthday, I turn 50 next week as well. yay lol. Interesting how kava played out for you, I guess there is no sense in suggesting different cultivars for you at this point but you should still consider it. I recommend Fiji Vanua Santa Cruz, it is a kava from The Solomon Islands and it is quite sedative/heavy. You never know, might be better than your current experiences.

You can buy a portable washing machine and turn it into a kava machine. (If you are not handy, buy one from Kavafied)
Amazon is cheaper :)
EDIT: This was such a good deal I just bought one, I'll let you know how it goes!

As for you friend, tell him to look into Forney Enterprises, he wants to reach out to John Fordham.

The Portable washing machine does work! The spin cycle is not strong enough to properly pull out all the water out but for 'kneading' purposes, it's perfect and it came out stronger than by hand. I used the dirty water spout :D to pour it directly into a 32 ounce pitcher, the rest went into my one liter "bilo". For less than twenty bucks, I can make my grog in the morning and have enough for the whole day. The machine fits in my fridge, so it may be even better for cooling it down but I haven't tested that yet, I will report back!

I have enough grog for the rest of this day lol, I may not finish it till tomorrow which is okay with kava, as long as it is refrigerated.

I was just wondering if the ravaged machine works well. I’m not handy but that portable washer is only $16. Makes me wish I was.

No need for any modification with this one, just wash it before use and don't bother using the basket, with the 2 minute spin cycle. i did a 5 minute wash and that was all I needed imo. The 10 minute wash is the other option.
