Interesting, if true, but inaccuracies in the article make me question the validity of the headline. For example, they claim New York City has 300 kava bars...that number is actually closer to 3. They also claim a single shell costs 5,000vt (about $50 USD)...that number should be more like 500vt (or $5.00). I find it highly unlikely that the Solomon Islands have more kava planted than the entirety of Vanuatu, but that impressive bundle of Melo Melo is worth the click on the link.

Holy cow that waka is impressive!

believed to be supplied there through the Anglican and Catholic Churches networks.
The farms are owned by the churches, planted by church members.
Interestingly the Fiji Seventh Day Adventist Church recently decided to allow their members to grow and sell kava. They still aren't allowed to drink it, but they had to be pragmatic about growing it as a cash crop. They have thousands of members living in parts of Fiji where there is no other income available to them (the copra/coconut industry is dead).

Fantastic! West Ambae is pretty heavily SDA and as long as the volcano plays nice they've got heaps of melomelo.

But yeah... New York is expensive and all but typical shells at kava bars in the US are more like 500-1000 vt. Maybe 1500vt in New York City.

The Vanuatu Daily Post really needs to work on it's fact checking... The article seems to be just uncritically quoting a government official who visited the Solomons and saw a lot of kava there, planted in more of a plantation style than the traditional style, but based on his comments about New York it seems the guy has a penchant for exaggeration.

That is an impressive bundle of roots, but I don't see what it has to do with the rest of the article

I am glad that there maybe more of this important export. I am sad that our export to you was Seventh Day Adventists...

Don't be.
IMO the old churches (SDA, Methodist, Catholic, Anglican) have overwhelmingly been a force for good in Fiji.
On the other hand some of your more recent, charismatic, tv-preacher, prosperity gospel type exports... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Yeah, aside from being vegetarians and straight edge, SDA's are pretty chill. Church on Saturday? That's OK, whatever works for ya.

Plus they invented CORN FLAKES. What other religious breakfast cereals are there, maybe Quaker Oats? Listen, I have a lot of respect for Quakers but corn flakes beats oatmeal every time. No contest.

Cornflakes are very valuable for preventing masturbation, which is what they were invented for. You just pour into your underwear then pound with a brick to crush and the fine rough edges make a credible threat of friction. Some say you just gotta eat 'em.
