I got my delivery! Thanks for sorting that out Judd. Just had a couple shells, but initial impressions are quite good.

Glad to hear it, Voodoo. Keep us posted on your findings. We share our kava with the public because we know it's good, but we love to hear individual impressions. There have already been a few on this forum as you've probably seen, all positive which obviously makes us happy. Bula!

I live in Vancouver, WA. A buddy and I will have to come check you out.

Your preparation method sounds intriguing. Inconsistent and yet laborious results from dry root has caused me to use primarily Fire Island instant kava. Do you care to share some more details, like the model of the juicer and where I might get one?

Ted, you're so close, you should definitely stop in.

Our prep method is very similar to traditional prep methods except that we use a machine instead of our hands. Of course like I said, we don't have the manpower to work the mixture around before squeezing it so we make up for that by letting it soak longer, mixing and squeezing twice, and using a machine that squeezes with 1800 lbs. of pressure. The machine itself is a commercial juice press. It's big (about 4 ft. tall, takes up 9 sq. ft. of floor space, and weighs well over a hundred lbs.), and expensive. Definitely not made for consumer use. It's made by a U.S. company called Good Nature which is located somewhere on the east coast. Come check it out sometime.

I like the tongan :)

The first thing I noticed when i opened the bag, is that it didn't smell very strongly. And to me, that's a good thing, because that means the taste isn't strong either. In fact, I think i picked up on some savory notes to the smell, which is odd considering that kava usually smells so rooty and earthy.

The grind is very nice, very powdery but also a good amount of very tiny root chips in there- and after soaking for 30 minutes it was very easy to squeeze and work with your hands without fear of ripping the pantyhose (if you use that, that is.)

Taste is so mild, and i would never go as far as saying delicious, but one thing i noticed is that i didn't shudder when i swallowed it. usually the taste of kavas are so... blech... that i involuntary shudder and pucker my face. this, amazingly, did not happen with the tongan. the taste could easily be covered up with a bit of cinnamon and chocolate syrup. it really is that mild.

The effects reminded me a bit like fiji waka, from kbr, or maybe a nice hiwa, but amazingly its tastes so much better than either of those. but it seemed more heady than body related.

unfortunately i did a big no-no and ate a meal before drinking, so i didn't get full effects. But its saying something that i did feel nice on it anyway, even after eating.

Judd, do you...offer franchises? Lol, I'm in the pre-planning stages of opening a nakamal in/near the north side of Chicago. However, as it is still in the, "pre-planning" stages, I'm still looking for options. A couple years ago I took a trip to Hawai'i to check out U of H Manoa for grad school in anthropology. While travelling around the market/town later in the evening, I met a women who offered me a few dixie cups full of fresh green "awa". Ever since then I've dreamed of introducing awa and it's culture to those willing to try it. So, in short, I saw this post and was just curious lol. Mahalo!

I'm planning my first order from Bula, can't wait!  How long does it take to ship to the midwest/east coast?  No big deal, I just like to plan my deliveries so that I'm home.
As a side note, I love to support non-Hawaiian kava distributors.  Not that I have anything against the 50th state (I love it actually), I just like to see more and more kava businesses take root in the continental US.

Ethnopharm- Not quite at the franchising stage yet, I'm still learning how to pull off one location well. Go to my website and send me an email though. I'd be more than happy to offer up some advice, and if the time comes for you to open your own nakamal I could probably offer some franchise type services such as product, decor/equipment info, etc...the Boroguru is nice. Pretty potent but not too pungent taste wise. It's super relaxing, especially muscularly.

Alohasteve- Thanks for the support. We ship everything USPS priority. The order usually goes out the day after you order it and will typically arrive two days later, sometimes three.

I'm hoping to get some BHK soon. In the mean time, I got a guy I know to give BHK a shot. It's his first time having kava. Unfortunately, he's too far away for me to prepare is first batch for him but I think he'll do fine. We'll see how he likes it.

Just received my shipment yesterday, Thursday, had placed the order Monday. Packaging is great, love the burlap bag and labels etc. Grind is very course in comparison to the kbr kava which just came in. Will share usage feedback soon.

So I was hoping for a little input from some savvy kava drinkers. I've been considering adding instant kava to my menu at the kava bar (probably as some sort of potent kava cocktail), and to what we sell online. Is this something you guys like to use or are you more into traditional kava prep with dry root and water? The instant kava I have access to is made from the juice of very fresh Vanuatu root, should be pretty high quality stuff. Thanks for the input in advance.

And BTW, I made a "lens" on Squidoo that is kava related. My blog is linked to there, articles are posted, etc. If you have a minute, check it out.

Hey Judd,

I'm just getting into kava, so I'm by no means an experienced voice, but one of my goals with kava is to find a way to be able to occasionally take a little in the middle of my work day to alleviate anxiety on really stressful days without falling asleep at my desk later. I'm experimenting with N@H Fire Island and Shaman, and I'm going to try some Vanuatu Kava Store Quick Premium and some Paradise Extract. I love the ability to be able to dump a couple of grams into a water bottle, shake it up, and down it for a quick shot of relaxation. My only other option is to have some kava root tea prepared the night before and keep it in a water bottle for when I need it.

I haven't ordered from you yet, but I plan on trying to Boroguru and the Melo soon so see if I can hang with them here at work. If you had an instant, I would definitely give it a shot, especially if you're going to have it made from dehydrated fresh kava root juice. Are you going to be having it made from all 4 of the different variants you currently stock, or are you probably going to just stick with Borogu?

krutonsb, Boroguru and Borogu definitely have some kick. Fu'u can be quite strong as well, but has more of a euphoric effect due to the high kavain concentration.
