Every morning after I wake up, I feel severely depressed for about 4 hrs. I am going through some stressful trials right now, so a part of me thinks it just might be circumstances. This may be attributed to the stuff I take for sleep. I drink 8 tbsp of kava about 4 hrs before bed, and Trazodone and California Poppy (herb) right before bed. Does anyone think this combo could be causing this feeling of being depressed?

Hi there Kavaguy,
So I personally have plenty of experience with all the substances you're taking. I also have issues with sleep. Here's my opinion on this matter.

1) Kava. I've taken it on and off for some years. This past week, I've got good noble kava and it has helped. I'd recommend that you continue using it; it can be a very good tool.

2) The trazadone. I used to take it. It definitely helped me fall asleep. But it also made me wake up with a very bad hangover. I felt awful waking up from it, and I know a lot of people who have felt the same.

3) Opium poppy seeds. Those are very potent. They're full of morphine and other opiates. I used to be addicted to serious opiates, and I have used a lot of types of them. You name it, I've done it. It can be tragic being addicted. It's really not good for you.

Last year, I eventually went to rehab and got clean. Now I'm sober for 180+ days. I've been on Suboxone, and that has really really helped. It's eliminated the cravings almost entirely.

So overall, I can't give you medical advice of course, but I can tell you what I would do if I was in your situation! I would see my doctor, preferably a psychiatrist. Tell them your experience with trazadone. I would definitely urge them to get me off of it ASAP. In my opinion, it is a shitty drug.

I would try to get help with the opiate issue. It really worsens depression to be dependent in some way on the killer poppy.

I wouldn't go to the extreme of never using psychiatric or prescription drugs whatsoever. When needed, it can be a lifesaver.

Depression is extremely complicated and tricky to fight. There are many factors. I've been terribly depressed for many years, and it's only been about a year since I was able to get it under control. I'll tell you about the factors I've found that have been able to stabilize me:

1) Exercise. You've probably heard this before. I just have to exercise in some way (weights or cardio) at least a few times a week.
2) Sunlight or sun lamp. I got a good sun lamp on Amazon that I use about an hour a day + I try to lay out in the sun as often as I can. I was surprised at how much it helped.
3) Healthy diet. I try to eat natural and whole foods now. Nice source of protein (meat) and some veggies, fruits, and yogurts everyday.
4) Supplements. I'm gonna sleep soon, so I can go over the supplements tomorrow if you want to know.

I hope this very long answer helps. Address the core issue, always. Stay well. :)

Kavabala, I appreciate your input. I decided I am going to go off the Trazodone, which I was taking for sleep, and just double up on the kava. The California Poppy is just something I order from Amazon and doesnt have any narcotic effects or content. Yes, if you could go over the supplements, that would be great.

Great to hear that! And my bad, I mistook the poppy you mentioned as opium poppy seeds. Lots of people use heavy amounts of that, and it's a very bad narcotic. California Poppy is totally fine, I've heard it works well for anxiety.

I would still be cautious using kava and California poppy seeds. These seeds have sedative CNS qualities and we all know kava has a similar effect. My advice, stick to kava & also tapper of Trazadone, though not addictive per say, going off of them cold turkey may cause insomnia, restlessness and even more anxiety.

If you're using heavy kava at night, you shouldn't need the Trazodone. Having morning after hangover effects is typical with it but that is usually dose dependent. Tolerance is also an issue with that drug. The califonia poppy is a good sleep enhancer and kalm includes it with their kava concentrate.

To answer your question, yes, any of these drugs alone or in combination can cause or worsen depression and insomnia. This can be done through chemical changes in the brain, or by these changes providing clearer thought, and the newly acquired perspective being critical of an already depressed individual. You could try the elimination process to see what may be the culprit (if you believe this is medicine related). However, since you have been prescribed at least the Trazadone, the doctors orders take precedent. Best is to work this out with a 'Good" therapist. Trazadone does not show any efficacy after a certain amount of time, and it is barely proven to do anything as a medicine. I have also seen each of the drugs mentioned alter blood sugar and blood pressure which can also worsen depression and worsen feelings of well-being.

Frankly, I was in your situation. Much deeper on the medical items taken. Very deep on the long-term issues and consequences. Decades long! Don't know why really, but probably a death in my family) but I promised myself to pull it together day by day and to Fast. I had only water for 12 days, and nearly took myself to the hospital through day 8-12. It was everything out of the film of a person slapped in a foreign prison and go straight turkey detox for hard drugs. It was that bad and it was prescribed drugs and the OTC methods I used. However, I emerged a different person.

Through it all, I realized that the med maybe helped, but they also did one entirely harmful act. They had no way to teach me how to cope with the items so close to the surface it was on me, but unbeknownst to me it was on my mind. The 12 days were so hard, like the Vietnam jungle in the Summer, alone, scared, hungry, confused, etc. I worked it out, and determined what is worth it. I chose personal happiness for the rest of my life. I also totally understood what that meant to me too. Before, on the meds, I would have not felt enough to know true happiness. Light, light so bright it turnes you closed eyes into orange marbles and you face seems to beam the rays back to the sun as you warm up and can somehow embrace life and life's place on the Earth. Like that. Not the ho humm things suck but I can live with them because the meds can taken the stress or depression level 10 and take it down to a "I can't take it anymore" 7 that you have been habituated to believing this is your life.

I also re-learned real (deep) sleep, that every methods I have found never gave me restful sleep, only time 'not in how down I feel' in some twilight. That is what leads to the that urger to be so overwhelimgly concened with the 'oh man this stuff better work tonight I should increase it' thinking.

No drug alone can teach a person how to deal with life from an emotional maturity and strength that the person never had or forgotten. No drug alone can make you happy, but they can cause you to feel happiness. No drug alone can return you to pristine sleep, but they can cause you to be in sleep.

Don't know what Kava can do for you or is doing, but if it helps you to clearly work this out, try it as a useful tool for talk therapy.

Easter Thorn, I had no idea Trazodone loses its effectiveness after a certain amount of time, so I plan to definitely taper off. I have noticed lately that after drinking heavier kava's like Stone and Kava Supreme that they tend to stay with me, but lighter daytime kava's dont give me a hangover. Only thing is, I toss and turn more in bed, but I suppose it is better to be a little tired vs fully rested and depressed. Thanks a lot for your post.
