Vanuatu Cyclone - How You Can Help

FWIW, for vendors and others adding donation information to their website, please be aware of the charity's terms of use if you use their logo or link to them. For instance, here is one from Save the Children US.
b) Your use of the name and logo or links bearing the name and logo may not indicate or create an impression that Save the Children will benefit from the sale of any good or service.
So under these terms, saying you will match donations would not be allowed, at least not without contacting them and negotiating new terms. I'm not sure if this has much teeth from a legal perspective, but best to respect their wishes anyway.

This also might be more of a US thing, for instance Oxfam UK just says this and invites you to email them if you can't find an image you're looking for.
This site and the information, names, images, pictures, logos regarding or relating to Oxfam GB are provided "as is" without any representation or endorsement made and without warranty of any kind whether express or implied. In no event will Oxfam GB be liable for any damages including, without limitation, indirect or consequential damages, or any damages whatsoever arising from the use or in connection with such use or loss of use of the site, whether in contract or in negligence.

Alright guys, I'm digging through more info. It seems to me like donations from the US to foreign incorporated charities are not tax deductible. So a donation to the Aus/NZ funds would not be a tax deductible. I'd recommend doing it anyway, if you don't care about the writeoff.

Just got done emailing Global Kava Exports. He's donating up to $1k (in USD, so slightly less GBP and EUR for his customers across the pond). The details are on the front page: http://www.globalkavaexports.com/

His contacts in Vanuatu also listed Save the Children & Oxfam as the most active over there.

Everyone has to make his or her own choice. For some people Oxfam is a great and efficient organization. Others compare it to a corporation and highlight the fact that their employees get very high salaries (if I am not mistaken, the head of Oxfam in the UK makes $200k plus a year). Some people believe a true charity shouldn't have well-paid CEOs, others think that what matters is the effectiveness of aid programs and well-paid managers are crucial when it comes to managing aid money. I have my own preferences when it comes to aid/charity organizations and I believe that everyone should (if possible) do his or her own research to determine which organization or institution is close to his or her ideal.

Hmm.. that banner looks very familiar. lol.
As Henry mentioned, Oxfam is a legitimate charity, and is heavily involved in Vanuatu, although there has been some "controversy," that in my opinion doesn't really amount to much. See the whole story here
$200k for a skilled manager of such a large organization is really not "highly paid", when they could make 10x that much working for a for-profit corporation.

We managed to get 3000USD to Tanna yesterday. Our Tanna emissary has shown up alive and well and our partners in Vanuatu are all accounted for except one and all are helping to rebuild. We are hopefull we will find our last remaining missing person soon, our resources on Efate are now being focussed on Epi Island, Mele and Pango villages.

However if you want to donate money that you know will be going into direct action now, please forward money to Pro Medical - http://www.promedical.com.vu/ - who are now getting water to the satellite islands around Efate and are cutting through red tape. Contact them via their site or on fb and they will give you their bank deets.

On their web site it is not clear how to donate, but they have a Facebook page which is more informative:
https://www.facebook.com/ProMedicalVanuatu
and have started a Go Fund Me campaign people can donate to:
I'll add the link up top, too.

Please add Jump Start Foundation to the list, they have been vouched for.

http://www.jumpstartfoundation.org.au/index.php/cyclone
Who Is Jump Start Foundation?
We are a not-for-profit organisation who has worked alongside communities in Vanuatu since 2002. Our main projects have been with communities on Tanna. All directors, management and supporters of Jump Start Foundation are volunteers - noone ever gets paid for the work.

How the funds will be used?
100% of raised funds
will provide support to the people and communities on the island of Tanna, Vanuatu. We can promise you that it is the people on the ground who need the help that will receive the benefits of all the money we raise.
They are also on Facebook as "Jump Start Foundation"

A message from Nelson, the owner of JPT:

"As you are aware the Category 5 Tropical Cyclone PAM went through Vanuatu
and at its highest potential, it went through the central Province,
devastating the Shepherds Group of Islands. In this group is the Island of
Tongoa, and my community of origin, Panita, where we also get most of our
"Lost Island Kava". (...)

[As some of you might know, Lost Island Kava is a very rare and unique variety (pualiu or puariki) that is known for very pleasant effects and mild, almost fresh taste. The Panita community has been growing it for some time, but they have been having some issues with processing it (some batches were excellent, others were less than perfect). Nelson has recently travelled to Tongoa to help his family and friends improve their processing techniques and to ensure greater purity, quality and consistency.]

[Due to the devastation caused by the cyclone] "Lost Island Kava" may be off our website within the
next few months as we sell off our last remaining stocks. It may well be up
to another four years before we will be able to trade again on this variety.
We are very worried about our community but doing everything we can to get
them to move on and start rebuilding their homes and gardens, including
planting new Kava plots. (...) The cyclone was so powerful,
it ripped off houses from their foundations and flung them off to sea. It is
a miracle everyone on Tongoa survived, but now they are starting from
nothing."

If you want to help them, you can consider donating through this website: https://givealittle.co.nz/cause/raruapanitarebuild

While much progress is being made and alot of us have helped out considerably already, there is still a major issue of communities having access to clean drinking water.
http://www.9news.com.au/world/2015/04/13/00/52/vanuatu-relying-on-rainwater

We will be heading to Vanuatu in less than 3 weeks and have partnered with wavesforwater and waterislife to bring some of these communities easy to operate water filters. Each of these filters can supply up to 100 people drinking water for up to 5 years. We are bringing as many extra suitcases exclusively for these filters as we need. Please take a look at our campaign on http://www.wavesforwater.org/courier/clean-water-for-devastated-vanuatu and donate to buying a filter if you can or share with your friends who may be interested. All donations are tax deductible and 100% goes toward the filters.

As internet access allows while we're there, we'll be uploading photos of the people you are directly helping.

Thank you for your consideration!
Mike

Mike, this is great that you are doing this. Just made a donation. You might want to make a "top level" post in the Lounge about this so that more people will see it.
