What is a lactone?

If I'm not mistaken lactones are simply a type of molecule/compound with a certain configuration, so a kavalactone would be one specifically referring any of the psychologically active lactones of Piper Methysticum

I don't think anything in that list is a lactone specifically, but some glycosides could be lactones and you may find lactones in resins.

If you want the chemistry of it, Wikipedia says that "Lactones are cyclic esters of hydroxycarboxylic acids" and that "esters are chemical compounds derived from an acid (organic or inorganic) in which at least one -OH (hydroxyl) group is replaced by an -O-alkyl (alkoxy) group."
