I could really use the answer to this, I would please love to have this one answered.
The answer is one few would ever recommend, because it has a set of issues associated with it: Toss 'n wash. It won't kill you, and for a while, or if practiced only occasionally, it probably wouldn't be a problem. Heck, to a certain extent, because of the physical nature of kavalactones, every way of drinking kava is a form of toss n' wash, just more or less extreme in the way we try to prevent consuming the hard indigestible interior parts of kava roots. So I'm definitely not snotty or looking down my nose on it just because I'm not interested. It has its legitimate uses and if practiced carefully should not cause problems. The best way to drink kava is whatever is best for you. We're all a bit different in what we need and how kava affects us, so we all adjust to our individual needs.
Over time I have become more and more convinced that the key to avoiding dermo lies as much with avoiding those hard indigestibe center parts of the roots as it does wth adequate hydration.
Instead I would recommend using my AluBall for the first two washes, then freeze and thaw and knead in a bag for the next 4 or 5 washes as the cheapest way of getting the most out of your grind. And one can make each shell more potent simply by adjusting the water ratios, which I sometimes do depending on my mood. For example, in my method, I usually use 500ml water to 2 TBS in each of two AluBalls, so 4TBS grind to 500 ml water. But you could make it stronger by using only 400 ml or much much stronger yet by using 350 or even 300 ml. Then the second wash, instead of my usual 400 ml I could use 350 ml or 300 ml. Basically you would simply adjust the water ratio down to make it as strong as your tastes required.
