1. 95% of the time they are unfair to the root. Most kava reviews are done, certainly outside of kava forums, by people who don't know what they are doing and don't even particularly like kava, so they are far from fair judges. They've heard some nonsense about kava, prep it badly, try it once, it does nothing and/or makes them feel sick. End of story. And that means : this is bad kava. But itcould be the best kava in the world. The root did nothing wrong. The root is fine, maybe perfect, even, it's the rest of the world which is wrong. It's so unfair.
2. They try it once and review as they are consuming it. Again, unfair to the root. To really get to know a root, you have to drink a bunch of it, with a bunch of different preps at different times of day, situations, moods, purposes. The root might be good for one thing, absolutely perfect, but maybe not so good for something else. Or it might be not so great by itself, but blend it with some other variety, in just the right proportion, and it's worth its weight in gold.
3. Everyone is different. We are at different stages on our kava journeys, and our bodies have different tolerances and even different receptors. I might find something heady that someone else finds totally heavy.
So, I don't really pay attention to reviews except as light comedy.
What would really do it for me is a panel of experienced kava drinkers who have different known preferences who then run the root through its paces in as many situations as possible. THEN I could really use their collective review as a reliable guide. Otherwise I'm just looking for two things: is it actually kava? and Will it make me sick? Other than that I pretty much take it from there.
Until then the best "review" we have is consensus. e.g. We all pretty much agree Squanch is strong and Squanch is good and kind o' different.. THAT is an accurate review.
