I'm considering trying some instant or micro from GHK and would like to know if anyone has tried both and can comment on the differences other than the obvious (micro grittier, instant tastes funny, etc).

@Gourmet Hawaiian Kava Chris, what do you think are the differences in strength between the 3 types? For instance, if I normally use 4 tbsps of root how much micro would I need? How much instant? To get the same effect? Thanks.

Chris' instant is the closest thing to drinking a fresh cup of kava in Vanuatu. It's smooth and yet potent (depending on how you mix it). Effective, but quite gentle on the stomach. I've tried both instant Maha and instant Mo'i and both are absolutely amazing.

That is a hard question to answer, as Henry said the instant is a real good one. I drink instant most of the time. Some people say that the micro is stronger than the instant but some say the instant is stronger, I guess it depends on the person. You would need to use less of the instant or micro. I would start with 1-2 teaspoons per cup of water and then drink 1-2 cups and then go from there. Aloha.

This is instant is truly phenomenal. Obviously more expensive than any other option, but definitely worth it. If you ever want to feel in a similar way that people feel after strong, fresh kava, mix a strong batch with this instant. A crazy mixture of smoothness, potency and freshness.

I have always taken issue with the idea that instant is more expensive. It's more expensive by weight but you use a lot less so is it really that much more expensive overall?

What would you define as a strong batch? With Hiwa, Papa Kea or Mahakea for instance I'm happy at around 5 tbsps of root, how much instant does that equate to in your opinion?

Only the big 3 are available in instant too. There are some more available in micro so may try a few of those. I didn't get on with m'oi. I like it at the time of drinking but I got a sort of comedown effect from it which wasn't pleasant.

I have used good amounts of both and prefer instant over micro. Micro had nice, potent effects but after time my stomach could not handle the grit. Eventually my stomach would turn just thinking about it. Micro also brought on quick dry and flaky skin.

GHK instant is amazing but I could blow through a bag of that real quick. It's very fresh and gives a nice clean feeling.

Traditional prep is my favorite now, but instant is a nice topper after a few shells of kneaded kava.

I always start with one level tablespoon and repeat until I get where I like - about 3-4 tablespoons over a couple hours.

That's for root I suppose? How much instant would you use to get similar effects?

That is for instant. I measure in tablespoons. The very first kava I tried was nene instant which I measured in teaspoons. I'm sure I was hesitant about kava in general back then. I usually start feeling it by 2-3 tablespoons. I take one at a time. Have gone as much as 5-6 tablespoons, but this would be spread out.

Traditional prep for me is usually 6-8 tablespoons in 2.5-3 cups water.

Oof, ok. That sounds like a lot but if you use 6 to 8 of root then I suppose you would need that much.

Sorry @Henry I just wanted to ask the question again... what would be your idea of a strong batch of kava made with instant? How much powder to how much liquid roughly, just to give me an idea. Thanks.

30 g to 500ml of water would be very, very strong for me. But we are all different so who knows what may work for you.

Hi @Edward, did you decide on instant or micro? Did you receive them yet? Just wondering if you've found your most beneficial dosage with them.

I've not placed the order yet. I'm on holiday next week and as it has to come through a us based reshipping agent I want to order it so I'll be there to accept the parcel when it arrives. I've more or less decided on instant nene and maybe a few other instants such as fire island from n@h just to try out. I'm going to get a good few hundred dollars worth of the nene and some of the med grinds, hiwa especially and then a smaller amount of a few others.

I have used a lot of the quick kava powder that vanuatu kava store used to carry and I found 2 heaped teaspoons in 200ml per shell would be about right for 2 or 3 shells. I could go stronger but with everyday use I found I needed less and less and got down to 1 teaspoon per shell at one point.

I'm happy for you and also a little jealous. That would do zip for me.
That was only after repeated use with the same kava though. Interestingly I've just had my last ever shell of QKP as it's the last I had left and they don't make it anymore. Had 3 heaped teaspoons in 250ml of milk and not getting nearly the same effects whereas at the time 1 teaspoon per shell would be a medicinal dose verging on recreational. I find I need more of some and less of others. With med grind I tend to go stronger but that's usually a weekend thing,
