@Jerome I've been looking into low carb diets and a few people have said don't bother counting calories... is that right? I know if I've got a litre tub of full fat greek yogurt I can put quite a dent in it and rack up some major calories at breakfast!

Also do you think a spot of really good honey in my yerba mate would be alright? ;-)

You'll need to eat a lot of fat to succeed with a low carb diet. A LOT of fat. Basically you're replacing the carbs with fat. There's a ton of good information on the web about low carb dieting but what I will say is, it works. You've got to stick with it, but when I took it seriously I knocked off the fourty pounds I had accumulated over a period of about 3 months. And it hasn't come back.

Brie And camembert, avocados, fatty pork and beef, good olive oils, cold water fish and shellfish... lots of eggs, heavy cream, coconut oil (more!), and glorious butter.

Sounds awesome to me but I think I might miss rice and pasta. Not so bothered about potatoes.

I eat rice and potatoes now. Was strict about the carbs to lose the weight. Once I got it off I back to a more moderate carb approach.

I've just been shopping and got what I need. It's more or less what I normally get but just less any carbs. Another question though... would you worry about the small amount of sugar in things like curry pastes? I could make my own but a bit of a hassle for a working man. I will get round to doing it though, freeze it in small batches. Also at the moment I drink a ginger cordial in fizzy water before and during kava sessions. This does have a little bit of sugar in. If I'm avoiding starchy carbs will the odd bit of sugar here and there make a lot of difference? Thanks for answering all these :)

Don't know about the curry pastes. You should eventually cut all pastas, rice, etc...eliminate regular potatoes and switch to sweet potatoes. No brown sugar or anything else added. We either fry them in virgin coconut oil or mash and add coconut oil and the KerryGold butter. Absolutely delicious. I would try cutting back on all sugars and eventually eliminate them if possible. I forgot to include a link for the best fat I use most of all. I buy the virgin coconut oil by the 5 gallon bucket. Here's a link you can check out for that, for future reference: https://healthytraditions.com/tropicaltraditions/coconut-oil/gold-label-virgin-coconut-oil.html

Awesome thank you. So sweet potatoes are ok? That's alright then, I like those.

Some will tell you they are not healthy, but the majority will tell you they are great...I say they are great! Research them. White potatoes are not healthy. Use these in place of your carb cravings. They will fill the void.

Ok fellas (and ladies feel free to contribute too of course), delicate subject here... I am coming up to my mid forties, drank alcohol for 25 years, switched to kava a few years ago albeit on and off with the alcohol but just gone kava only. I've noticed things "slowing down" a little downstairs, less desire, less strong erections, etc. This is fairly natural given my age but I wonder firstly if it could be anything at all to do with my kava consumption? I do tend to go quite heavy and I am a daily drinker. Has anyone else of my sort of age or older noticed an effect? Secondly I wonder if there is anything I can do to improve my situation? Supplements, exercises? I'm not at the stage where I am too concerned, it all works and I can still please my wife, but I'm thinking about the future.
In my opinion there is a connection. I am in my mid-forties and after a little over a year of daily use I noticed the same thing. It is just a guess here - but I think it lowers testosterone by interfering somehow with cholesterol. There seems to be enough tidbits of anecdotal information on "lack of desire" along with some studies and anecdotal blood test results that show changes in cholesterol level (which is necessary for testosterone production) that I think it is at least a possibility. I personally have tried adding zinc, magnesium, vitamin D, olive oil and DHEA to my diet - all of which helped (although the DHEA gets pretty mixed results in studies).
If all that fails - go get yourself some cialis. Even if things are all good, that stuff will have the oak trees in you neighborhood jealous and your partner scared.(y)
Great non-technical website: http://www.artofmanliness.com/2013/01/15/how-testosterone-is-made/
He even has a section where he did a 90 day experiment to raise his T-level naturally with test results to prove it.
Good Luck!

If you want something a little more healthy to replace the pastas, rice, etc...these make a great substitute, but I would keep them to a minimum. Once or twice a week won't hurt. The first is Couscous: http://thescienceofeating.com/carbohydrates/benefits-of-couscous/
The second is Quinoa: https://authoritynutrition.com/11-proven-benefits-of-quinoa/
I actually eat both. When you are exercising, lifting weights, ect...you need some complex carbs for stored energy. Where people get in to trouble is eating to many complex carbs and are sedentary. Then these carbs are converted and stored as fats. Not only that, but they affect your blood sugar levels.

Thank god for that, it's not just me! I'm looking into the best supplements at the moment but what do you think about a high fat diet to counteract the loss of cholestrol? I've always worked long hours but the last few weeks I've been working a mixture of nights and days, not always enough sleep and stuck out in the lorry for days at a time so my diet has been hit and miss to say the least. I think it was Tuesday I really noticed the problem and today it's slowly getting better, I had wood today at least. I'm home now until Tuesday morning and I'm doing a different job ongoing so should be easier to sleep and eat better. I'm hoping that makes a difference.

Yes, I would say recently I have had a lot of carbs and not a lot of movement due to work. That should change soon. Thanks for the tips.

@Kapmcrunk this forum is the greatest ever, thank you so much for putting it together. We can chat about kava, find out what we need to know and even talk about stuff like this with people who won't ridicule or flame you in any way. Just awesome to have a group of individuals like this, I feel like every one of the members here is a friend, to a certain degree at least.

Yes, keep your diet high in the "good" fats. I like olive oil and flax oil over fish oil, but that is just a taste preference. I also upped my egg and nut consumption as well. I now cook up a dozen hardboiled eggs at a time and have them at all times of the day.

We use to eat extra virgin olive oil almost daily until I read statistics that stated over 80% of olive oil in the states is not what you think it is. It's been discovered that they add other oils to it, so I'd suggest doing your due diligence the best you can. This is why we switched to virgin coconut oil. I eat at least 4 free range chicken eggs per day...often times more. Good stuff!

Hey man, this whole endeavour has been as much as an enriching learning experience for me as it has been for anyone who visits this site. I'm honored to host such a uniquely human and undoubtedly awesome group of people as members of kavaforums. This is family here.

Yeah I knew about that but I still love the taste! I can't guarantee that the olive oil I get is pure, but I use good Ol'Wegmans variety which at least up until January participated in a testing program http://blog.aboutoliveoil.org/21-olive-oil-brands-certified-for-authenticity

@Kava Wolf @Zaphod don't they grow a huge amount of olives in Mexico? I'm lucky in Europe because Italy, France, Spain and Greece and plenty of others have a huge olive industry and it's relatively speaking on the doorstep. Actually the best olive oil I've ever had was from Morocco, so intense, peppery and fruity.
