Well, to be honest I am not too surprised that it got banned there. After all, it's a country where stoning is a legal form of punishment and where apostasy is punishable by death. They also have de facto slavery and banned half of the Internet.
Yet another reason not to go there for holidays.
Ps. Interestingly enough, alcohol remains legal, albeit VERY restricted, in most of the emirates. Unlike alcohol, kava does not "lead to sin and/or conflict between men without offering significant benefits to mankind", which, if I understand it correctly (and I am by no means an expert in Islamic law), is the basis for banning booze.
