The Emirates ban kava

America has the highest incarceration rate in the world. Rape is so prevalent inside the prison system, it's become a "running joke" on network television. When's the last time you heard about 20 people being shot/killed in one weekend in Abu Dhabi or Saudi Arabia? It doesn't happen... it does however take place almost every weekend in the summer in Chicago/Baltimore. We sure do like to point our fingers at other countries though.....
The American (and not only American) penitential system is a disgrace and most probably often equals to gross violations of human rights.

At the same time, how do you know what really goes on in Saudi or UAE? It's not like they have free press that will publish trustworthy reports. We know that they publicly behead people in Saudi, often for victimless crimes, we know about the tortures, we know about the hypocrisy of the elites (that goes beyond even the ridiculously high levels of hypocrisy and corruption of the Western elites), we know about the armies of de facto slaves from South and Southeast Asia.

Yes, you are right that we should first look at the violations of freedom and human rights taking place in our own jurisdictions. However, I would still venture to say that people enjoy less freedom in the UAE and in this context it does not surprise me that their government chose to ban kava.

It's the same ignorance towards it just for different reasons. I mean ubless theres a pharmaceutical industry running Saudi too? Haha
Just to clarify: only the Emirates seem to have banned kava. I think it is possibly still LEGAL in Saudi Arabia! :)

are americans proud of the incarceration rate ? is prison rape and inner-city violence state sanctioned or something ?
if you haven't researched Sharia Law and the atrocities it not only allows, but calls for, by the state...by the citizen...there is no comparison. Hey, maybe that's why they have fewer incarcerations, horrible crimes are simply legal and holy acts there. (semi-joking :sneaky:) (and no, i'm not suggesting every person adheres to sharia law 100% in those countries)

as for kava in muslim countries, legality on the books is one thing, whether it's halal or haram within islam is another.
moderate muslims interested in kava often aren't sure themselves, but when they start asking, the conclusion is typically haram. Making it illegal either way, if you are muslim.

Agreed the US prison system is abhorrent. The existence of Guantanamo is abhorrent. But human rights in Arabic countries such as UAE and Saudi are also abhorrent. Living in a country where such things happen does not preclude one from pointing out worse things happening in other countries. The correct response is to criticize both, not to remain silent.

To the state sanctioned point... that's debatable but setting up an environment conducive to 'getting raped' could be considered 'state sanctioned'
I 100% agree with verticity, "The correct response is to criticize both, not to remain silent."
I love America, the founding fathers are like rock-stars to me, my hero's... I just like pointing out that we have some of the same exact 'human rights' issues at home, ours are just more 'concealed' where as in the middle east, they are very public with their transgressions.

Kava can soften you up and make you have compassion for your fellow beings. That cannot be tolerated.
