hi
I have purchased some kava kava tablets from Biovea , they are 500mg Kava and have 30% kavalactones , I have taken one tablet here and there and doesn't seem to effect me , I have just taken 2 tablets together.

what I want to know is how long it takes to work and how much should you take? does it need to build up?

I am taking as I get bad anxiety about once a month and would like to reduce this.

thanks

@foxycleo
Step 1: throw the tablets in the trash
Step 2: choose from one of the vendors on. Gourmet Hawaiian kava, and Bula Kava House are the most popular of all. But there are several reputable vendors on here as well.
Step 3: make your purchase and enjoy.

In all seriousness though those tablets won't do anything and you are going to be disappointed. If you are looking to get anything out of kava you need to search for one of the vendors here on the forum. Do not buy from Kona kava farms or kava.com as they use shit products.

If you're not into the preparation and want something you can mix with juice or coconut water, ect, look into instant kava, or maybe micronized. Not trying to dissuade you, but the taste of kava is an acquired one. I personally love the taste and do not mix it with anything besides water, but there are a decent amount of people who do not feel the same.

I'm no expert when it comes to kava, so I'm sure some others will chime in.
@verticity @Edward have been very helpful when it came to helping me find the right kava. Also @LunaKava is one of the vendors I purchased from and he has amazing customer service.

Sorry for the overload here, but I would recommend that you take a couple hours do some research on the forum here, and ask as many questions as you can. Don't feel shy asking the vendors specific questions as well. You can message them directly on here or make a post in their section. All of the ones I've dealt with so far have been genuinely kind people and are willing to help. You're more than welcome to ask me any question, but I may be of limited help as I am not incredibly experienced with kava.

From what I just looked up
Bula kava house
Kalm with kava
And cactus kava
All should ship to uk. It is possible that you will be charged custom charges but I really do not know.
I have never used instant kava so you would have to wait for someone to chime in or just look it up here on the forum. There is a search button right below the alert icon in the top right corner of the page.

Global kava exports are based in the UK now and this is their instant:- http://globalkavaexports.com/product/quick-kava-powder/
:)
It's a really good instant to start you off with too. Start with 2 to 3 teaspoons in 200 ml of water or milk and repeat after 45 mins to an hour. Keep using every evening and it shouldn't be long before you start feeling effects and can judge if you could use it during the day and at what dose.

Welcome to the forum. @Abbas is right about the tablets. Usually, they're not very good. You'll get much better results from either a ground kava root that you will strain and knead to make a drink, or an instant (or micronized) that you'll just mix into water. Instants and micros aren't as much of a value but you're paying for convenience. Traditional grind kava has a very inexpensive cost per serving price, but it will take you about 15 minutes to brew up a good batch. That said, a lot of people find the preparation of kava soothing.

We do in fact ship to the UK Shipping cost for up to a couple pounds, unless the order includes something bulky like a coconut shell, is $26 I believe. We mark the value of the package as about half what you actually pay to try to reduce the possible duties our customers pay, but some duty is possible. Typically customers receive their kava in 7-14 days, though it varies quite a bit based on how suspicious/lazy/busy customs is.

Global Kava Exports are good people. I'm not sure what kavas they're carrying now, but if you do the math, they may or may not end up cheaper than us or any of the other US based vendors.

I hope you find something that eases your anxiety. Let me know if I can help you with anything or answer any questions.

Bula!

@foxycleo @Abbas The shipping on my last order from BKH was $66.50 for 4 lbs of root. That's not bad considering it's nearly 2 kilos. What hits you with BKH orders is the customs charge. There always seems to be a charge and even if it's only £2 you get slapped with an £8 fee for them to collect the charge. I don't know why only BKH orders are charged a customs fee, no other US vendor has this. I'm not sure if the other vendors don't mention the value of the items on the package and send it by a different service maybe with less insurance? I ordered 2 lbs of micro not too long ago and the customs charge was £29! Judd has kindly agreed to lower the declared value right down on this next order so I'm hoping there will only be a small fee to pay. There is a sticker on the parcel which says duty is payable on all imports with a value over £15 so anything over about $20 is going to attract the fee but I don't mind a small charge as the kavas are worth having. I recommend the instant green and the micro. Yet to try the others but they're on their way :)

GKE don't charge for shipping and they carry some awesome kavas. The instant is really good and the other stand outs are the Koro Island Fijian and Pentecost Pride which is a borogu. They are not as cheap as most vendors but you get your root within a couple of days.

Everyone finds each kava slightly different but there is a vague agreement about most. Pouni Ono is almost all heady with no body feeling or sedation, good for day time. Borogu is good all round kava, quite balanced but tending to heady. I find it really sedating but others don't so much. I wouldn't use for daytime but great for a relaxed evening. Boronguru is a bit of a mystery to me, I find it quite heavy but with some headiness, not sure what I get from it, I've got to use it a bit more. Loa waka is quite balanced, again good all rounder.

If you want to use during the day I recommend micronized pouni ono and for evenings micronized borogu. Simple to use and effective. That's just out of those 4 though, there are plenty of others to choose from out there.

That is quite odd. You can't just "not mention" a value unless you claim it as a gift, which I suppose other vendors may be doing. The problem with this is that it's illegal. We ship enough kava to the UK that eventually someone at customs would start saying, "There sure are a lot of gifts of "south pacific teas" coming from Bula Kava House". At that point customers who paid quite a bit for shipping wouldn't get their orders at all and they'd either be confiscated or returned to us (USPS would of course keep the shipping price paid). So we do mark it as merchandise, but for about half of what the customer pays. This limits the duties but some will still be incurred most likely.

To me it's just a slight added expense of drinking kava and not something I worry about. Even an extra £29 on the cost of what I paid when spread out per day or per shell wouldn't add that much. I don't know why it doesn't happen with other vendors but I'm guessing they just send it as parcels without specifying too much about what's in them? We're lucky at the moment that the UK border force don't seem to be too hot on these parcels or maybe they are getting in because although kava is illegal to import for human consumption it's not illegal for other purposes. Who knows? All I know is that I'm glad I can get it because going back to alcohol right now is the last thing I want.

Yeah, I don't know. A shipper could only not specify what it is if they're sending as a gift. Which brings us back around to that not being legal and having the potential of being refused by customs. I wish we could do something, but blatantly lying about the contents isn't worth the risk to us. Not only could a few shipments get denied, but we could get blacklisted all together and none of you blokes would be drinking Bula Kava House kava.

Oh yes, better to play it by the rules. The parcels get through but we have to pay a little more when they arrive. Big deal, just drink some kava! :)
